Our Executive Director, Kubra Mir, was honoured to attend the Liberal Caucus Eid Al-Adha Reception on Parliament Hill in Ottawa. The gathering brought together community leaders, parliamentarians, dignitaries, and stakeholders from across Canada to celebrate Eid Al-Adha and recognize the contributions of Muslim communities.

The reception also marked the beginning of the Islamic New Year, providing an opportunity for reflection, connection, and meaningful conversations.

Kubra had the pleasure of meeting her Member of Parliament, Jennifer McKelvie, who kindly introduced her to several Members of Parliament; MP Salma Zahid, a strong advocate for gender equality and diverse communities and MP Shafqat Ali, President of the Treasury Board (Minister). It was wonderful to speak with newly elected MP Dolly Begum who became the first Bangladeshi-born Member of Parliament in Canada.

She also had the opportunity to meet Feda Abdelhady, the new Ambassador of Palestine to Canada, and connect with Pakistani-Canadian community leader Mashooda Lubna Syed, whose dedication to community service continues to inspire.

Events like these highlight the importance of building bridges, strengthening relationships, and celebrating the diverse voices that contribute to Canada’s multicultural communities.

We were honoured to partner with Sakeenah Canada for a wonderful community event focused on learning, creativity, and connection.

Guests learned about the important work Sakeenah Canada does from Shamyle Khan, Mental Health Program Manager, who shared how they provide culturally and religiously sensitive support services, including housing, food support, mental health programs, and community services.

Our Board member Huda Adnan, Registered Social Worker and clinical supervisor at Noor El Huda Therapy and Consulting Services, shared valuable insights on setting healthy boundaries and caring for our emotional well-being. https://noorelhuda.com/

The very talented Leila Farsi led a creative activity where participants decorated bookmarks https://www.instagram.com/diyar.calligraphy/

We enjoyed delicious refreshments, including fatayer and Arabic pastries from Nazareth Brother Bakery, fruits, and dessert. Two lucky winners also received prizes from Travel Builder, who create personalized and halal-friendly travel experiences. https://thetravelbuilder.com/

Thank you to everyone who joined us and helped make this event a memorable experience.

At Muslim Women of Durham Region, we believe that small acts of kindness can create a lasting impact. Today, our volunteers had the privilege of providing lunch for 45 individuals at the drop-in shelter at Pickering Library.

We served a warm meal of chicken with rice from Calypso Queen in Whitby, salad, water, and rice pudding. We also prepared take-home lunches with chicken sandwiches, fruits, and granola bars to help provide continued support beyond the meal.

A heartfelt thank you to our dedicated volunteers who helped make this initiative possible by picking up items, preparing, and serving lunch: Natalia, Soobia, Rabia M, Hira, Kubra, Fatima, Zaynab, and Rabia S. We also extend our gratitude to all our members who generously donated toward today’s lunch and continue to support our community initiatives.

In Islam, feeding your neighbour is considered a sacred duty and a reflection of compassion, generosity, and faith. It reminds us of the importance of caring for one another and ensuring that no one in our community feels forgotten.

We are grateful to the DARS team for the opportunity to participate in this meaningful initiative and for their ongoing efforts to support individuals and families in our community.

Together, through compassion and service, we continue to build a stronger, more caring community

Our June meeting was a wonderful gathering filled with fellowship, service, and community learning. We were delighted to see a strong turnout and enjoyed a delicious potluck lunch generously prepared and shared by our members.

As part of our commitment to supporting those in need, members brought canned food donations for the Nurish Food Bank, and additional contributions were made through online donations. We are grateful for the generosity of our members.

Our members have also been busy sewing reusable sanitary pad liners in partnership with the Sunrise Whitby Rotary Club. These liners will be sent to girls in the Dominican Republic, helping them stay in school and continue their education with dignity. While much progress has been made, there are still liners to sew, and we look forward to finishing them.

We were honoured to welcome Ajax Councillor Marilyn Crawford and Nancy Henry to our meeting. The gathering began with a land acknowledgement and opening prayer delivered by Huda.

Anu Sharma, Policy Advisor with the Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Division in the Office of the CAO, provided an informative presentation on Durham Region's Anti-Hate initiatives and the Community-Based Hate Reporting Program. Participants learned about the online Hate Reporting Tool https://www.victimservicesdurham.ca/antihate, which offers a secure and confidential way for victims to report incidents of hate and discrimination.

We also heard from Tineka Levy, Policy Advisor for Community Safety and Well-Being, who spoke about resources available to residents, including a community toolkit and community healing fund designed to support community resilience.

The final presentation was delivered by our member Rabeah. She shared information about IDRF, a Canadian charity that partners with organizations around the world to deliver relief and development initiatives. She also discussed Help the Hungry, a project launched in 2021 that has provided more than 5.45 million meals. Finally, she spoke about Nurish Food Bank, based at the Oshawa Mosque, which currently supports approximately 75 families, including single parents, and new immigrants.
