"Painted Out of the Picture: The Wives of the Group of Seven"

While the husbands received acclaim for their contributions to Canadian art, the wives of the Group of Seven were largely overlooked. This talk, led by author/curator Angie Littlefield, sheds light on the significant roles these women played in shaping their husbands' careers while also emphasizing their agency in carving out meaning in their own lives.

Author/Curator Angie Littlefield has authored three books about Tom Thomson. Her most recent work, Tom Thomson's Fine Kettle of Friends, was shortlisted for the Whistler Independent Book Award in 2021. Additionally, she has written articles and curated exhibitions at the Art Gallery of Ontario, the Museum Ludwig in Cologne, Germany, and the Lonsdale Gallery in Toronto.

Meetings are held in the auditorium of the Pickering Central Library. Doors open at 6:00p.m. It's free and everyone is welcome.

Please join the PTHS on May 14 in the auditorium of the Pickering Central Library
for a very interesting talk by Arlene Gehmacher as she reflects on the ROM's recently-completed "watercolour project". She will share her insight into the impetus of the acquisition of such works and present specific examples, and consider the approaches taken to collect and interpret historical pictures. Doors open at 6:30 and starts at 7:00 p.m.,

Arlene Gehmacher is an Art Historian specializing in imagery of Canada from the 18th century to the present, primarily in the visual idioms of Western European art. She studies "Canada" as a subject in its social context, in terms of production, critical reception, institutional histories and display strategies, as a means to address how identities and historical narratives from national to personal levels are articulated and communicated.

Arlene is cross-appointed as Associate Professor in the Department of Art History at the University of Toronto. Since 2003 she has taught her seminar course "Collecting Canada", which using the ROM's holdings, focuses on practical and theoretical aspects of the collecting of "Canadiana" imagery.
