Dynamo you did it! đź’Ą

For 14 weeks, these all‑women newcomer entrepreneurs showed courage, creativity, and commitment. They balanced families, work, and life while showing up with passion every single week.

Now they step forward as business founders ready to launch their ideas and make an impact in our community. Who will deliver the next unforgettable Dragon’s Den pitch? We will find out next week. The community is watching.

This initiative is proudly supported by the Nanaimo Foundation in collaboration with Community Futures Central Vancouver Island (CFCI).

We are proud to sponsor Connect Money Impact 2026, a dynamic one-day event that convenes social entrepreneurs, impact investors, and ecosystem builders committed to creating stronger, more resilient communities. This gathering provides a valuable platform for collaboration, knowledge sharing, and driving meaningful social and economic impact.

The day focuses on rethinking how capital, community, and enterprises can work together to support greater positive impact towards community wealth, food systems, climate, and more. The goal is to connect impact and values-aligned investments to good projects and enterprises making a difference in the region (Vancouver Island, Lower Mainland and the Coast)

Is Your Business Idea Worth Pursuing?

Every business starts with a moment.

A frustration.
A gap in the community.
A skill people keep asking you for.
A thought that keeps coming back: “Someone should do this.”

But how do you know if your idea has real potential?

Look for these signs:

People already have the problem.
If you hear the same complaint more than once, there may be an opportunity hiding there.

People ask for your help.
When others keep asking you to make, fix, teach, organize, build or solve something, pay attention.

You can explain it clearly.
If people understand what you offer right away, they are more likely to remember it, share it and buy it.

Someone would pay for it.
Encouragement is great, but customers are the real test.

You can start small.
One product batch. One service package. One pop-up. One trial customer. You do not need the biggest version of the idea to test whether it works.

The numbers make sense.
Can you cover your costs, charge a fair price and make a profit without burning yourself out?

The best way to test an idea is to get it out of your head and into action.

Write it down. Ask questions. Talk to potential customers. Run the numbers. Get feedback.

Your idea may be closer than you think.

Students, your summer job might be one idea away.

You do not have to wait for someone to hire you. You can create your own job, earn money and build real business experience this summer.

Start here:

Step 1: Pick an idea
Ex. Lawn care. Pet sitting. Tutoring. Car washing. Event help. Errands. Cleaning.

Step 2: Choose one thing to offer
Keep it simple. What can you do well? Who needs it? Why would they pay for it?

Step 3: Ask 5 people
Ask family, neighbours, teachers, coaches or friends’ parents:
“Would this be useful?”
“What would you pay?”
“Who else might need this?”

Step 4: Make a mini business plan
Write down:
What you are offering
Who it is for
What you will charge
What supplies you need
How people can contact you

Step 5: Share it
Post it. Print it. Text it. Say it out loud.

Try this:
“Hi, I’m offering ______ this summer in ______. I can help with ______. Message me to book.”

Step 6: Show us your plan
Have a student business idea? Community Futures Central Island has a business plan template available and would be happy to review your plan and provide feedback to help you get started.

Email [email protected] to request the template or share your plan.

Your first customer could be closer than you think.

Share this with a student who is ready to earn, learn and try something new this summer.

Let’s help young entrepreneurs get started.

Summer is not just a season. It is a business opportunity.

Before the patios fill, tourists arrive, markets get busy, and locals start looking for fresh things to do, now is the time to ask:

Is your business ready to be seen, shared, and supported?

Here are a few quick ways to get summer-ready:

Refresh your online presence
Update your hours, photos, Google Business Profile, website, and social media bios so customers can find you fast.

Create a summer offer
Think bundles, limited-time services, seasonal menus, event packages, loyalty perks, or a “bring a friend” promo.

Show up where your customers are
Try short videos, behind-the-scenes posts, local hashtags, community groups, email newsletters, posters, and partnerships with nearby businesses.

Make it easy to buy
Check your booking links, payment options, signage, menus, inventory, and customer journey before the rush begins.

Tell people what makes you local
Customers love supporting businesses with a story. Share your people, your process, your neighbourhood, and why you do what you do.

Need help turning ideas into action?

Community Futures Central Island supports entrepreneurs with business advice, financing options, planning tools, and local connections to help you move into the summer season with confidence.
