Oceanside Chess Club We are a chess club based in Parksville, Vancouver Island. We host annual chess tournaments and weekly meetings on Saturdays.

Some argue that Opening books are useless as the Computer Age is upon us but we at Oceanside Chess beg to differ. There's still something to learn from the classics. At left is George Hatfield Dingly Gossip's 1889 publication: "Gossip's Chess Player's Text Book" and at right is a 1970 revised and updated edition of Richard Clewin Griffith and Harry Golombek's "A Pocket Guide to The Chess Openings". Inside you can see it was available for purchase at 9 shillings and 6 pence!

In response to recent events regarding the 2027 BC Chess Open, Oceanside Chess wishes to voice our support for the BC Chess Federation. We recognize the importance of unity and fairness in provincial chess organization and fully endorse the BCCF and their decision in this matter. We encourage our members to support the officially sanctioned event if you are planning on playing this Family Day weekend.

This time out he's aiming to help the intermediate crowd improve their play; i.e., strong club players with tips and insights to take your chess to the next level.

Patience is a virtue as Batman once said to Robin. He also said 2 hands on the Bat-rope chum! At any rate, if you are excited about the upcoming repress of The Life and Games of Mikhail Tal you're going to have to wait a few more months as New in Chess has pushed the release date to March of 2027!

Oceanside Chess sends out a message of healing and support to one of our youngest members, Theo! Rumour has it he took a fall and managed to fracture that left arm of his. We're not sure, it may have been due to over zealous knight moves on the chess board. 😉 Anyways, please join us in wishing Theo a very speedy recovery!

There are a number of great chess content creators out there, Levy Rozman, Hikaru Nakamura, Anna Cramling, etc... etc... but for our money few are more compelling than Canadian Chess Expert Zachary "Zach" Saine. Based in Montreal, Zach aka "The Chess Nerd" is a fresh, optimistic, and infectious force of nature. With a presence on a wide front of social media platforms it's our hope that you've encountered Zach already. If you haven't then we're hoping this lil' post of ours might just be the ticket. Zach is rapidly closing in on his much coveted Chess Master title and a rating of 2000. We KNOW he's going to do it!

Zach is definitely one of the most instructive content creators going!

Two old friends that are definitely missed. Former BC Champions NM Harry Moore at left 1954-2022 and NM Dan Scoones 1952-2021. Mainstays of BC chess they both called the Victoria Chess Club home. It was pure entertainment watching them go over a chess position - animated and intense the two of them. Pictured are Harry and Dan from the Victoria Labour Day Open in 2001. RIP fellas with much love and respect from the Oceanside Chess Club. Never to be forgotten. 🙏

A big shoutout to our sister club, The Comox Valley Chess Club in Courtney, BC. They're sponsored by the good folks at the Gladstone Brewing Company. They're currently meeting at 6pm Tuesday evenings at the Gladstone Pub, downtown at 244 Fourth Street.
