Safe 'N Sound Safe 'n Sound is a not for profit organization created in 2007 by a group of local citizens concerned about the lack of emergency shelter in Grey and Bruce.

Vision

Safe 'n Sound envisions a community committed to ending homelessness where everyone has safe shelter with appropriate services. Guiding Values and Principles

• We believe that our internal processes and decisions should strive for consensus.

• We believe that every human being has fundamental rights and we need to help and support that in need while being respectful that accessing service is a choice.

• We believe that everyone should be treated with dignity. They are entitled to a bed, not a floor, to health and nutrition, and safety.

• We believe in providing services which are respectful, inclusive and non-judgmental.

• We wish to encourage a respectful community, recognizing and drawing on community expertise, and ensuring accountability of services to the community.

• We believe that our organization should also be consistently working towards our own goals and a commitment to learning which is reflective of our vision. Safe ’n Sound is a not for profit, charitable community based organization. We operate "The Space" (310 8th Street East, Owen Sound) - a community within a community where the at risk of homelessness and the people experiencing homelessness can access basic needs as well support, advocacy and referral.

💙💛 MOVEMBER | MEN’S MENTAL HEALTH 💛💙

November is Movember, a month dedicated to raising awareness about men’s health, including mental health and su***de prevention.

Men of all ages, identities and backgrounds can experience mental health challenges. Social expectations, stigma and barriers to accessing support can make it difficult to reach out when things get tough.

At Safe ’N Sound Grey Bruce, we believe everyone deserves to feel safe, supported, connected and valued.

💙 What can Safe ’N Sound offer?

💛 A welcoming space to be heard without judgment

💙 Connection, conversation and a sense of belonging

💛 Food, warmth, basic necessities and emergency shelter

💙 Support accessing health care, mental health services, substance use treatment and housing resources

💛 Compassion, dignity and community

Sometimes a familiar face, a listening ear and a connection to support can make all the difference.

This Movember, let’s create space for conversations about mental health, check in on one another and remind the men in our lives that support is available and nobody has to face difficult times alone. 💙💛

🎃🍬 NO, THERE AREN’T DRUGS IN YOUR HALLOWEEN CANDY! 👻

Every Halloween, the warnings return. Watch out for fentanyl in candy! Check for drugs hidden in chocolate bars! Be careful what strangers are handing out!

But where did this fear come from? And what does it have to do with stigma?

🍭 A little Halloween history…

The fear of poisoned Halloween candy gained momentum in the 1960s and 1970s, alongside growing public anxiety about drugs, crime and strangers.

In 1974, a father tragically poisoned his own child using Halloween candy. The story made national headlines, but the poisoning wasn’t the work of a stranger handing out treats.

By the 1980s, sensational headlines, urban legends and anti-drug messaging had helped turn Halloween candy tampering into a widespread fear.

🔎 So, what does the evidence say?

Sociologist Joel Best has studied reports of Halloween candy tampering for decades. His research has found no substantiated cases of a stranger killing or seriously injuring a child with contaminated trick-or-treat candy.

And despite recurring warnings about fentanyl disguised as Halloween treats, there is no evidence of widespread distribution of fentanyl to unsuspecting trick-or-treaters.

💙💛 Why does this matter to Safe ’N Sound?

Because fear and misinformation contribute to stigma.

When we repeatedly associate drugs with strangers, danger and people we don’t know, we reinforce harmful assumptions about people who use substances.

People who use drugs are our neighbours, parents, friends and community members. They deserve dignity, safety and compassion, not suspicion based on frightening stories.

There are real risks associated with the unregulated drug supply, and those risks deserve our attention, evidence-based responses and resources.

This Halloween, let’s leave the scary stories to the ghosts and goblins. 👻

Check your children’s treats for damaged packaging, allergens and choking hazards. Keep medications and cannabis edibles safely stored away from children.

And remember: We can protect our children without stigmatizing our neighbours.

Happy Halloween, Grey Bruce! 🎃💙💛

A BIG thank you to Zehrs Owen Sound and OSHaRE’s Grey Bruce Food Share! 💙💛

Our friends at Zehrs helped make our very first BBQ at the new Safe ’N Sound shelter extra special with a generous donation of food and supplies! 🌭🍪

A special thank you also to OSHaRE’s Grey Bruce Food Share program, which helps rescue and redistribute surplus food from local businesses to community organizations and programs throughout Grey Bruce.

There’s something wonderful about bringing people together over a meal, sharing a few laughs, and making new memories in a space that will soon welcome so many of our neighbours.

We’re so grateful to Zehrs Owen Sound and OSHaRE for helping us celebrate this exciting new chapter and for showing our participants what community kindness looks like.

Thank you for being part of something special! 💙💛

💙💛 What a beautiful day at Safe ’N Sound!

A heartfelt thank you to everyone who joined us for today’s BBQ, stopped by for a tour, dropped off donations, or sent along their kind words and well wishes.

We see the love, kindness, and generosity in this community, and we are so grateful for every bit of it. 💙

One of the most meaningful parts of today was seeing our participants in the new space, sharing in their excitement, and witnessing the relief that comes with knowing there will be a safe, warm place to sleep.

These moments remind us why this work matters so much.

To our volunteers, staff, supporters, neighbours, and community partners, thank you for helping bring this space to life. This is what community looks like. 💛

🚨 DRUG ALERT – GREY BRUCE 🚨

Grey Bruce Public Health has issued another drug alert.

A yellow/gold coloured substance being sold as fentanyl has tested positive for carfentanil. Carfentanil is an extremely potent opioid, approximately 100 times more potent than fentanyl, and greatly increases the risk of a fatal overdose.

Please take extra care:

💛 Avoid using alone
💛 Carry naloxone and make sure someone nearby knows how to use it
💛 Start with a small amount and go slowly
💛 Have someone check on you
💛 Call 911 right away if someone is unresponsive or not breathing normally

If you suspect an overdose, administer naloxone, repeat every 2–3 minutes if needed, and stay with the person until help arrives.

This is another painful reminder that the toxic drug supply continues to put lives at risk in our community. People need compassion, harm reduction, and access to care, not judgment.

A special thank you to Supportive Outreach Services (SOS) for providing critical mobile drug checking services in our community. This important harm reduction work helps identify dangerous substances in the unregulated drug supply, supports timely public health alerts, and gives people potentially life-saving information to make safer decisions.
