🎃 A Dementia-Friendly Halloween 👻

Halloween can be full of fun, but costumes, unfamiliar faces, loud noises and frequent knocks at the door can sometimes feel overwhelming for a person living with dementia.

A few simple changes can help make the evening more comfortable:

🧡 Keep outdoor and indoor areas well lit
🎃 Choose friendly decorations rather than frightening or startling ones
🔔 Consider limiting repeated doorbell ringing or loud noises
🍬 Keep familiar routines whenever possible
👻 Be patient if someone seems confused or needs a little extra reassurance
🏠 If trick-or-treating becomes overwhelming, create a quieter space away from the activity

A little understanding can go a long way toward creating a Halloween where everyone feels safe, welcome and included.

Happy Halloween from the Alzheimer Society of Grey-Bruce! 🎃🧡

A diagnosis of Lewy Body Dementia affects more than one person. It impacts families, friends, and entire support networks. 💙

Living with Lewy Body Dementia can bring challenges that change from day to day. While symptoms may affect thinking, movement, sleep, and perception, no one should have to navigate those changes alone.

Early recognition and ongoing support can help individuals and families:
✅ Understand symptoms and what to expect
✅ Access community programs and resources
✅ Connect with education and support services
✅ Build confidence in managing day-to-day challenges

This Lewy Body Dementia Awareness Month, let's remember that behind every diagnosis is a person with a lifetime of experiences, relationships, and contributions.

By increasing awareness, showing compassion, and connecting people to support, we can help ensure that no one faces dementia alone.

If you or someone you know is affected by dementia, the Alzheimer Society is here to help. 💙

When someone is living with Lewy Body Dementia, understanding matters.

People with LBD may experience visual hallucinations, movement changes, sleep disturbances, or periods of confusion. These symptoms can be frightening for both the individual and those around them.

A few simple approaches can help:
✅ Stay calm and reassuring
✅ Avoid arguing about what they see or believe
✅ Reduce noise and distractions when possible
✅ Maintain consistent daily routines
✅ Encourage medical follow-up and support

Most importantly, remember that the person is more than their diagnosis.

By responding with empathy, patience, and understanding, we can help create communities where people living with dementia feel safe, respected, and included.

This Lewy Body Dementia Awareness Month, let's replace stigma with understanding. 💙

Did you know? 🧠What's good for your heart is good for your brain. 🧠

Managing blood pressure, staying active, eating well, and getting regular check-ups can all support brain health. High blood pressure is one of the most important risk factors for stroke, heart disease, and dementia. 🚶

💙Every healthy choice is a step toward a healthier brain.

🧠 Why is Lewy Body Dementia so difficult to recognize?

One of the hallmark symptoms of Lewy Body Dementia (LBD) is that a person's thinking and attention can fluctuate dramatically.

Someone may seem alert, engaged, and independent in the morning, then become confused, withdrawn, or struggle to focus later in the day.

These changes are not intentional and are not a sign that someone is "faking" their symptoms.

Common signs of LBD can include:
• Sudden changes in alertness or concentration
• Difficulty following conversations at certain times
• Episodes of confusion that come and go
• Variations in memory and thinking from day to day

For families, these fluctuations can be confusing and frustrating. Understanding that these changes are part of the disease can help caregivers respond with patience and compassion.

Awareness leads to understanding. Understanding leads to better support. 💙
