Canada's Building Trades Unions has shared an important update on new federal supports for skilled trades apprentices.

Brothers, Sisters, and Industry Partners,

Summer is almost halfway over already, but progress continues for Canada's unionized skilled trades workers. I recently attended the Sheet Metal, Air, Rail, and Transportation Workers (SMART) Canada's 50th Canadian conference in Edmonton, Alberta. While there, I was able to provide an update on the federal government's Team Canada Strong Program - investing $6 billion over the next 5 years to recruit, train, and certify 100,000 Red Seal skilled trades workers by 2031.

After a quick meeting last week, Minister of Jobs and Families Patty Hajdu appeared for an interview on CTV and discussed new federal supports for apprentices. The government confirmed the one-time $5,000 completion bonus will be retroactive to May 2025 to cover apprentices who missed the former $4,000 Apprenticeship Completion Grant, which was sunsetted in Spring 2025. This is fantastic news for our apprentices, and we'll share more details as formal instructions come from Minister Hajdu's department.
With August approaching, I hope you find time to enjoy the rest of summer - whether that’s a round of golf, getting a great steak from the butcher, or a trip to see The Odyssey in IMAX.

In solidarity,
Sean
