Historic win for workers! 🎉

Today, the International Labour Organization adopted the world's first global labour standards for platform and gig workers.

For too long, app-based workers have faced low pay, unsafe conditions, lack of benefits, and decisions made by opaque algorithms. This new convention sets a global benchmark for fair pay, workplace protections, social security, transparency, and workers' rights in the digital economy.

At the International Labour Conference, CLC Human Rights Director Vicky Smallman spoke on behalf of workers as delegates adopted conclusions on the Transformative Agenda for Gender Equality.

Real change requires more than commitments. It means tackling structural barriers, strengthening collective bargaining, and ensuring no worker is left behind.

Framed as a response to supply chain disruptions, the Senate Committee on Transport and Communications is recommending new rules that would push rail and marine labour disputes toward mediation, arbitration, and government intervention instead of strike action.

The right to strike is a constitutional right, not a loophole. It's one of the most important tools workers have to win fair wages, safe workplaces, and better working conditions.

William Davis' courage sparked a movement, one we honour every . ✊

Today marks the 101st anniversary of Davis Day.

Davis Day (William Davis Miners’ Memorial Day) honours the memory of William Davis, a coal miner who was killed during a strike by Nova Scotia’s miners against the British Empire Steel Corporation.

On this day in 1925, William Davis was shot and killed by company police in New Waterford while marching for safer working conditions and an end to anti-worker actions by the company.

Today, we remember those who fought and sacrificed for the rights and protections workers enjoy today. While we’ve come far, we must continue their fight; for safe workplaces and good jobs for all.

CLC Campaign Lead, Laurie Antonin, joined movement leaders at Netroots Nation in Philadelphia for a panel on why movement-owned tech matters.

Netroots Nation brings together progressive organizers, labour leaders, digital strategists, and movement builders working to improve people’s lives through organizing and technology.

Laurie spoke about the importance of tech built for the movement, such as Action Network, which helps unions organize workers, mobilize members, and build lasting power.

For labour, technology has to be about more than efficiency. It has to help workers act together.

Speaking at the International Labour Conference, CLC Secretary-Treasurer Lily Chang called for workers to have a real voice in how AI is developed, governed, and used in workplaces.

The future of AI at work cannot be left to employers and tech companies alone. Workers need a voice, strong protections, and a share of the benefits that new technology creates.

As governments move quickly on AI adoption, workers must be at the table from the start.
