We now know more of the heartbreaking and infuriating details of the death of 24-year-old Olivier Bruneau. This death was preventable.

All levels of government must make the commitment to enforce the Westray sections of the Criminal Code and prioritize workplace investigations and enforcement of the law. A demonstrated commitment to Westray will save lives like Olivier’s in the future.

"I'm working as hard as I can, but the inflation just keeps getting bigger and bigger, and the gap of having and not having is widening every month."

People like Danielle Barnsley are making impossible decisions all across the country, wondering when if and when the struggle will end. We need to see government invest in social programs that will ease the burden on single mothers like Danielle, who have been one of the hardest hit groups, along with immigrants and racialized workers.

Tax the record-breaking profits of corporations, make them pay their fair share so we can lift workers across Canada out of poverty.

Danielle Barnsley was living paycheque to paycheque, but it was manageable. However, with rising inflation, her bills — and stress levels — are no longer sustainable.

Giant corporations find all the loopholes to avoid tax and leave the government $30 billion short. Who are they going after? Workers who received emergency benefits.

Those billions in government coffers could pay for social programs to help people across Canada struggling to afford food, housing and other necessities.

The math is all wrong—it’s time for the companies that are driving up prices and making huge profits are made to pay their fair share.

Even with record profits, big corporations are still filling their pockets – with $30 billion.

When government coffers are short that much money it means less for social programs to help Canadians struggling to afford food, housing and everyday necessities. It’s time the companies that are driving up prices and earning huge profits are made to pay their fair share.

On September 30 it’s important to remember we’re not talking about the distant past. Indigenous peoples face violence and systematic discrimination to this day. It’s up to all of us to acknowledge this and take action.

September 30 is the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. This is a day to remember and honour all the Indigenous children stolen from their families and communities, and sent to residential schools. It is also a day to mourn all the children who never returned home.

Staff at the CLC have put together a resource centre to help people across Canada start to learn about Canada’s colonial past and make sense of what action they can take in their workplaces, unions and communities to support Indigenous workers and communities.

We’re not talking about the distant past, violence and systemic discrimination affects Indigenous communities to this day. It’s up to us to acknowledge and take action against it.
