Southlake Foundation Southlake Health Foundation inspires investment from our community in leading edge care, close to home. www.southlakefoundation.ca

Since its inception, Southlake Foundation has granted $93.8 million to Southlake, transforming our Hospital from a small regional Hospital to the world class healthcare facility that it is today. Funds have been generated for medical equipment, capital projects, patient programs and staff education - all for the goal of creating a hospital that meets the expectation of excellent outcomes for our f

amily members, friends and neighbours. At Southlake, we are committed to creating an environment in which our patients can have the confidence of expert care delivered by a compassionate team who truly puts the patient first. A lofty goal perhaps, but one to which our commitment is unwavering. At the Southlake Foundation, we believe that transparency and accountability are essential to our success. With that in mind, we were one of the founding members of Imagine Canada’s Ethical Code Program, a national program which requires that charities adhere to the highest standards of accountability in their relationships with donors. As a donor, it is important for you to know that a portion of your gift will be allocated to cover Foundation expenses necessary to raise millions of dollars annually and to help support the Hospital’s priority needs not covered by other funding. The Southlake Foundation Board establishes and monitors the allocation amount as part of the annual budgeting process. Our sincere appreciation to the generous donors who share our vision. It is through your support that we can improve the lives of hundreds of thousands of patients and their families every day.

This "Leave a Legacy" month, we’re honoured to share the incredible legacy of James Murray Purcell, a beloved father, grandfather, and great-grandfather.

Jim’s life was a beautiful journey of love, laughter, and adventure, and his daughter, Heather, shared moving words about his legacy and the impact of Southlake Health on their family:

"In 1962, we moved to Newmarket when I was just one. Our family, and my father, have called this place home ever since," Heather reflects. "When my mom was diagnosed with brain cancer, it was a terrifying time. We didn’t know what was happening, but Southlake was there for us."

"My father went through prostate cancer, and Southlake was there. He then went through lung cancer, and Southlake was there.”

Heather continues, "You don’t realize how much you rely on your hospital until you truly need it. For my dad, knowing that Southlake would be there for his family in times of need, even after he’s gone, meant everything."

Jim’s legacy lives on through his gift to the Southlake Health Foundation, ensuring that generations to come will receive the care they need.

If you or a loved one has received compassionate care at Southlake, leaving a legacy gift can ensure that hundreds of other community members and families will have access to leading edge care close to home, just like yours did.

May is "Leave a Legacy" Month, and we’re honoured to share the legacy of Gordon Barnes, a long-time Aurora resident and supporter of Southlake Health.

An active volunteer, ceramic artist and environmentalist, Gordon won Aurora’s “Citizen of the Year” Award in 2010 in recognition of his volunteer work. Gordon passed in 2023, but not before one more act of service for his community – leaving a legacy gift to Southlake as part of his estate.

“Southlake was a part of Gordon’s life for quite a few years. He was sick for a very long time, but he kept going — like the Energizer Bunny!” says his stepdaughter, Clare.

“He talked about how wonderful the staff was. Whatever doctors he was seeing, he was always impressed with them, and the nurses were very caring. He totally trusted everybody at Southlake — he had a relationship with them. Life for him wouldn’t have been nearly as good if he had to negotiate care.

For Gordon, Southlake was always available and there for him. He used the healthcare system a lot, and he wanted to give back and help others get better care.”

This Leave a Legacy month, consider what your legacy can be.

If you or a loved one has received compassionate care at Southlake, leaving a legacy gift can ensure that hundreds of other community members and families will have access to leading edge care close to home, just like yours did.

As the population in the communities we serve continues to age, specialized care and understanding for elderly patients is more important than ever. That’s why this Nursing Week, we’re celebrating Annie and Sue, two nurses in the Geriatric Emergency Management Program at Southlake Health.

For 90-year-old Carl, visits to Southlake’s emergency department were unfortunately, frequent. Thankfully, Annie and Sue were there with friendly faces when he arrived. Trained to provide specialized assessment, advocacy, care, and referrals for elderly patients seeking emergency care, Carl’s daughter Renee remembers how both nurses went above and beyond to ensure her father got the right care for his unique needs.

“Being able to spend extra time with senior patients and learn about their lives, not just their medical history, can be very fascinating,” says Sue, who has been a nurse at Southlake for nearly 25 years.

“They helped my dad feel comfortable and listened to his concerns. They had him laughing. They don’t get recognized enough for what they do,” says Renee.

For Annie, who has also been a nurse at Southlake for over two decades, the Geriatric Emergency Management Program plays a key role ensuring elderly patients receive supportive care to enables them to return home. Even small acts of care make a huge difference in getting seniors back to the people and places they love.

“Despite the volume of patients in the Emergency Department, we remind ourselves that little things make a big impact. Being able to get seniors up and moving can reduce their length of stay in the emergency.”

For over two years, Carl received care in a number of departments at Southlake, including Emergency, Cardiac Care, Integrated Stroke Unit (ISU), and Southlake@home.

“At every stop, he was surrounded by people who went above and beyond — not just to provide care, but to give comfort, connection, and dignity,” says Renee.

Sadly, Carl passed earlier this year. But the care he received in the last years of his life provides his daughter Renee great peace.

“Losing him was heartbreaking, but knowing he spent his final months surrounded by people who cared so deeply brings me comfort. Because of everyone who cared for him, he left this world knowing he was valued and loved. Southlake’s nurses didn’t just care for a patient. You cared for a father, a husband, and a hero. Your kindness, skill, and compassion gave our family more time, more smiles, and more peace than words can ever express.”

This Nursing Week, Southlake Health Foundation celebrates all our amazing Southlake nurses, like Annie and Sue, and all our physicians, staff, and volunteers who touched Carl’s life, providing compassionate, patient-centred care when it mattered most.
