A Shared Mission in Local Impact: Community means rolling up our sleeves alongside dedicated neighbors at organizations like the Nelson CARES Society, tackling complex social initiatives, creating employment pathways, and expanding affordable housing options. Knowing we are actively working together to strengthen the fabric of our town builds a deep sense of shared purpose.
Care and Unwavering Inclusion: At its core, community means holding space for everyone with dignity and compassion. It lives in the doors of our Coordinated Access Drop-In Center, where unhoused neighbors find essential safety, warm showers, laundry facilities, and nourishing food, ensuring that caring for our most vulnerable is always a shared responsibility.
Community is deeply tied to the rhythm of our homegrown music scene: It echoes through open mic nights at Finley's, the pulsing energy of local musicians playing at The Royal, and the incredible talent celebrated at Selkirk College's annual music graduation shows. Music gives our town a collective voice and a shared heartbeat.
Beyond the music, it is found in the electric magic of local traditions like the annual Pantomime at the Capitol Theatre, the Mural Festival, and the Summer Night Market. Community thrives when we share in the collaborative rush of expression and celebrate the passion and innovation of our local entrepreneurs and makers on Baker Street.
Belonging comes from the moments when people show up for one another, whether that is parents volunteering side-by-side on the baseball sidelines, families cheering on the Leafs Hockey team, skiing a big powder day, doing dishes at the Food Cupboard or swimming at lakeside, together."
