Local Sports Organization of the Month: Duncan Swim Team the Stingrays

This month, we’re celebrating an organization making waves in our community! Their commitment to helping young swimmers reach their full potential goes far beyond the pool. Through excellent coaching, skill development, fitness, goal setting, and sportsmanship, they empower every swimmer to grow in confidence, resilience, and ability.

From local competition to the Regional, Provincial, National, and International levels, they create opportunities for every child to chase their goals, work hard, and discover what they’re capable of, both in and out of the water.

Congratulations on making a splash and inspiring the next generation of athletes in our community!

Athletes Of The Month!!

Athletes from Island Top Team Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Mixed Martial Arts topped the podium at a Lower Mainland event.

Grappling Industries Vancouver took place at the B.C. Institute of Technology Recreation Services facility on Sept. 12 and all members of the Nanaimo-based academy captured gold, Rob Biernacki, head instructor, said in a press release.

Among the medals captured by Daniel Jin, a gold in the teen gi blue belt division and a silver in the adult no gi intermediate division. Jin had “several dynamic submission victories,” said Biernacki, which included “a seven-second ankle lock finish.”

Congratulations!!

From Mill Bay to Powell River, PacificSport Vancouver Island operates across the traditional, ancestral, and unceded territories of many distinct Indigenous Nations and Peoples. We are grateful to live, learn, work, and play on these lands, and we recognize the enduring strength, resilience, and contributions of Indigenous communities throughout the region. As an organization committed to creating inclusive, accessible, and quality sport experiences, we recognize the role sport can play in building connection, belonging, understanding, and relationships. Today, we pause to listen, learn, reflect, and honour the Survivors and those who never returned home from residential schools. We encourage our sport community to continue learning about the histories and lived experiences of Indigenous Peoples and to consider how we can contribute to meaningful reconciliation every day.

Local Sports Organization of the Month: Element Riding!

This month, we’re proud to recognize Element Riding as our Local Sports Organization of the Month!

Element Riding has played a huge role in helping us run our bike camps and, most importantly, giving kids the opportunity to get on a bike, build their confidence, learn new skills and discover the joy of riding.

Their commitment to the community goes far beyond coaching. Element Riding is passionate about community, equity and inclusion, environmentalism, and high-quality coaching. From volunteering and supporting local mountain bike initiatives to making riding more accessible and creating welcoming spaces for underrepresented groups, they’re helping make cycling a sport for everyone.

We’re incredibly grateful for the time, expertise and passion Element Riding brings to our programs and to the wider community. Thank you for helping us get more kids on bikes!

Thank you, Element Riding, for everything you do!

Athlete of the Month: Ryder Wilson!

This month, we’re proud to recognize Nanaimo’s own Ryder Wilson as our Athlete of the Month!

Ryder has had an incredible year on the bike, and his latest achievement is a huge one — becoming the 2026 Canadian Downhill Mountain Bike Champion in the Expert Men U19 division at Sun Peaks.

What makes this achievement even more impressive is the journey behind it. After coming up just short of his goal at last year’s championships, Ryder returned this year with something to prove. Despite taking a spill during the event, he dusted himself off, stayed focused and delivered when it mattered most.

At just 18 years old, Ryder continues to show what can happen when talent, hard work, resilience and determination come together. From winning the U17 national title in 2024 to now claiming the U19 championship, he’s been an incredible example of what young athletes in our community can achieve.

Congratulations, Ryder! We’re excited to see where your riding takes you next. 🇨🇦
