June is National Indigenous History Month, a time to honour the resilience, cultures, and histories of First Nations, Métis, and Inuit peoples across Canada.

At Haven Society, we know that gender-based violence cannot be separated from the legacy of colonization. Indigenous women, girls, and 2-Spirit people face disproportionate rates of violence, and Indigenous communities have always led the way in protecting and healing their own.

This month, we reflect on the land we work on, the communities we serve, and our commitment to walking alongside, not ahead, as we work toward a world where everyone is safe and belongs.

Repost • 🌈 Happy Pride Month, Nanaimo! 🌈

June 1st is more than just the start of a colourful month - it’s a time to honour our history, celebrate our community and stand together in visibility, love and resilience.

This year is incredibly special for the Hub City. We are celebrating 30 years of Pride in Nanaimo! Back in 1997, a brave group of local folks took to the streets for our very first Pride march. It wasn’t an official civic event back then, it was a courageous, grassroots act of pure defiance and community love.

Fast forward to today, and we are also marking 10 years of the massive, joyful Nanaimo Pride Parade & Festival as we now know it! We’ve grown from a self-contained protest into a beautiful, vibrant city-wide celebration with over 15,000 attendees, showing just how far we’ve come when we stand together.✨

Save the dates for Pride Week (June 8th – June 14th): We have a whole week of incredible community events.

June 8th - Heated Rivalry Trivia at the Queens
June 9th - Pride Flag Raising at City Hall
June 10th - Rainbow Rave Silent Disco at Colliery Dam Park
June 11th - Pride on the Mic at MGM Restaurant
June 12th - Club Soda Sober Pride at the Nanaimo Museum
June 13th - Annual Pride Dance at the Vancouver Island Conference Centre
June 14th - The Nanaimo Pride Parade and Festival, downtown and Maffeo Sutton Park

The work of ending violence doesn't happen in a single lifetime. It is built, slowly and carefully, by communities of people who refuse to stop believing in something better.

This Legacy Month, Haven Society invites you to be part of that future through a planned gift. A legacy gift, made through your will or estate plan, helps ensure that our services continue to grow and reach the people who need them most.

You don't need significant wealth. You need the conviction that safety is worth protecting, for everyone, always.

May 17th. A day to be loud about something we hold close: every person deserves to feel safe, loved, and free to be exactly who they are.

To our 2SLGBTQIA+ community members, we see you, we support you, and we're glad you're here 🏳️‍🌈

On this International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia, we're reminded that gender-based violence touches 2SLGBTQ+ lives deeply, and our commitment to ending it extends to every person we serve.

A monumental day for victims of intimate partner violence.

Behind this decision are very real people who suffered the devastating impacts of intimate partner violence, and with this new tort, it will make meaningful difference for survivors as they seek from their abuser.

BC was the only province in Canada to intervene in this matter. I applaud the bravery of the survivors and organizations that stepped forward to share their personal experiences and highlight how much damage these acts of violence truly cause people.

Gender-based violence affects 2SLGBTQIA+ women and gender-diverse people at disproportionate rates, yet their experiences are too often overlooked, dismissed, or left out of the conversation entirely.

This week, in honour of the upcoming International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, and Transphobia, we're sharing what the data actually shows, and what it means for our community.
