Based in Nanaimo, BC, we are a leading anti-violence organization operating from feminist principles.

Haven Society provides services to women, children, youth and families who have experienced violence. Every year over 3,600 women and children in the mid Vancouver Island area seek support to deal with issues of physical and sexual abuse and violence. Programs include Community Victim Services, Children and Youth Who Witness Abuse, Women's Counselling, Willow WAI, and the Haven Transition House. All Haven Society services are confidential and free of charge.

Her efforts helped restore rights and recognition to thousands of women and their families, leaving a lasting legacy of equality and justice. ✨

At Haven Society, we stand with all impacted by Residential Schools and government assimilation policies. Our work against Gender-Based Violence intersects with Reconciliation and Decolonization.

One-third of Missing and Murdered Indigenous women and girls are from BC. Ending Gender-Based Violence requires Reconciliation.
We encourage learning about this day and Orange Shirt Day.

For many people fleeing violence, safety comes with a hard question: what happens to my pet?

This week at Haven Society, we celebrated an answer. Carlos was the very first pet to call Haven home, arriving with his mom at a time when safety, stability, and a place to belong mattered more than ever. His birthday became a beautiful reminder of how far a family can come when they have a safe place to land and a community standing beside them.
And this year, Carlos received something extra special: a middle name, Haven. His mom chose it as a heartfelt thank-you for everything Haven has done for both of them.

But Carlos wasn't celebrating alone.
Residents from our Second Stage and Transition programs joined the party with their families. They brought homemade dishes to share, gifts for Carlos, laughter, and plenty of love. What started as a dog's birthday became something much bigger: people coming together, building relationships, and celebrating the joy that grows when a community feels safe.
