🍌🚲 BANANA DAY RIDE 2026 🍌🍦

August 25th is National Banana Split Day, so we’re celebrating with a bike ride and ice cream!

Join us for a fun, short, all-ages-and-abilities ride from Western University along the Thames Valley Parkway, and down to District Ice Cream.🍦

Meet at the Talbot College Building at 6pm. Ride starts at 6:30pm.

Be sure to bring a working bike with a bell and any banana-themed clothing and accessories. 🚲🍌

Great ideas start on the ground—or in this case, on two wheels! 🚲

I had the pleasure of meeting with Vincent from London Cycle Link for a bike ride through the heart of Wortley Village to discuss the future of cycling in Old South and across Ward 11.

While we enjoyed the ride, we also tackled the serious need for a Bike Lane Continuity Plan. It’s not enough to have a lane here and there; we need to expand and connect them.

My priority is bridging the gaps between our streets and the Thames Valley Parkway (TVP) so that families and commuters can utilize the entire network safely and confidently.

Real choice in transportation means building a connected grid that serves everyone.

Went on a great neighbourhood bike ride last week with volunteers from London Cycle Link - starting at my house, going up Wortley to Ivey Bridge, up and down Ridout, over to Wellington via Emery, down Whetter and past the hospital via Base Line, then through Old South over to Manor Park and thru Murray Park.

While biking, we discussed the need for protected and connected cycling networks. We celebrated the protected paths on Ridout St, heading to downtown and how much safer they made us feel. We bemoaned how unsafe we feel on roads with sharrows or single-file signage.

Cycling infrastructure is about giving people real choices and building neighbourhoods where an 8-year-old and an 80-year-old can get around safely. My vision for Ward 11 and London is building a connected, protected grid that makes walking, cycling, transit, and driving work together so that everyone can get where they need to go safely, affordably and efficiently.

People should be able to choose their preferred transportation option - and not feel scared that they won't make it home alive from their commute. 🚲🚶🏽‍♀️

Regretfully, we must announce the difficult decision to cancel this year’s East London Canada Day event.

This decision wasn’t easy but it was well informed and with the safety and well-being of our community, business owners, vendors, guests and especially our volunteers, at the forefront.

With extreme heat expected and temperatures feeling like 46°C or higher, we have a responsibility to ensure the East Lions Community Centre remains available as a City cooling centre for those who may need it most. We have also been monitoring the risk of severe thunderstorms and strong winds during event hours, which are extremely likely and would create additional undue safety risks on top of the extreme heat.

We know many people were looking forward to celebrating with us, and we are truly sorry for the disappointment. Thank you to our volunteers, organizers, sponsors, vendors, and community partners for all of your hard work and support.

We appreciate your understanding and continued support of the East London community.

Squeaky Wheel Bike Co-op will be closed on Tuesday, June 30 and Wednesday, July 1. Remember to keep cool, shaded and hydrated as you enjoy this Canada Day week 🧊🌳🥤🍁

To our shop staff Jensen and Ian, as well as our core volunteer squad, get some well-deserved rest from the amazing work you do for our neighbourhood and local cycling community.
