On September 30, we mark the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation to remember the children, families, and communities harmed by residential schools, and recognize that their impacts continue across generations.

These impacts did not end when schools closed. Intergenerational trauma, systemic racism, poverty, displacement, and discrimination create circumstances that traffickers exploit. Because of this, Indigenous women, girls, and children are disproportionately affected by s*xual exploitation and human trafficking in Canada.

This is not because Indigenous identity creates vulnerability—it is because systems of harm created trauma that traffickers exploit.

At Not4Sale, we believe prevention begins with understanding. When we understand the roots of vulnerability, we can recognize risk, challenge these systems, and work toward a safe future for every child.

Truth helps us understand. Reconciliation calls us to act. Every child matters. 🧡

Key youth group signs:

💛Social Withdrawal: Pulling away from lifelong friends or favorite activities to spend time exclusively with a new, vague acquaintance.
💛Housing Instability: Couch surfing, unexcused overnight absences, or a history of running away.
💛Hotel & Travel Clues: Carrying hotel room key cards, commercial toiletries, or unexplainable frequent travel to nearby cities.
💛Secretive Phone Use: Secondary phones, hiding screens when adults approach, or posting s*xualized/criminal content.
💛Inappropriate Attire: Clothes heavily mismatched for the weather or dressing to look significantly older.

Spotting these patterns early allows us to step in before harm escalates.

An estimated 88% of trafficking victims interact with healthcare workers while trapped. Because clinics are often one of the few public places victims go, medical staff play a critical role in early identification.

Key healthcare signs:

💛Controlling Companion: Someone insists on answering questions, refuses to leave, or monitors interactions.
💛Branding & Tattoos: Physical marks like barcodes, crowns, dollar signs, or names/initials on the neck, chest, or lower back.
💛Inconsistent Stories: Rehearsed or conflicting explanations for physical injuries and trauma.
💛Reproductive Health Flags: Frequent requests for emergency contraception, untreated STIs, or recurrent pregnancies.
💛Delayed Care: Advanced untreated infections, chronic illness, and extreme exhaustion.

Recognizing these signs creates a vital window to intervene safely.

Traffickers exploit daily school routines to target and control youth. Because educators interact with students daily, staff are in a unique position to spot sudden shifts.

Key school signs:

💛Unexplained Absences: Chronic truancy, sudden drop-offs in attendance, or missing school on a predictable basis.
💛Unexplained Wealth: High-end clothes, multiple cell phones, jewelry, or salon treatments beyond a student's means.
💛Older Partners: References to a significantly older partner who drives them or controls their schedule.
💛Behavioral Shifts: A student becoming highly withdrawn, aggressive, hyper-vigilant, or chronically exhausted.
💛Industry Terms: Inadvertent use of terms related to commercial s*x or labor (e.g., "the game" or "handlers").
