October may be coming to an end, but disability-inclusive employment matters all year long.

Throughout National Disability Employment Awareness Month, we've shared stories, talked about barriers to employment and highlighted the skills and contributions people with disabilities bring to workplaces.

At KW Habilitation, we believe in a community where everyone belongs and meaningfully contributes. Employment can be an important part of that.

Through KW Career Compass, we work alongside job seekers to build skills, explore opportunities and pursue their employment goals. We also work with employers to help create workplaces where more people have opportunities to contribute their skills and talents.

NDEAM gives us an opportunity to have these conversations, but the work continues long after October.

☕ Meet Tatiana, The Hangout's new Café Attendant!

With a passion for customer service and making people smile, Tatiana is bringing her skills and positive energy to The Hangout.

After completing LEG Up! to Retail, Tatiana connected with this employment opportunity through her KW Career Compass job coach. When asked what she wants employers to know about her that might not appear on her résumé, Tatiana shared:

October is National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM), and Tatiana's story is a great reminder that people bring so much more to a workplace than what's written on their résumé.

The talent is already here. Are we recognizing it? According to the Ontario Disability Employment Network, 71% of employers surveyed who were not hiring people with disabilities cited a lack of awareness of their skills.

That points to an important part of disability-inclusive employment: looking beyond assumptions and recognizing the skills, experience and potential people bring to the workplace.

KW Career Compass works with employers as well as job seekers, helping create connections that can lead to more inclusive workplaces and meaningful employment opportunities.

This National Disability Employment Awareness Month, we're encouraging employers to think about how they recognize talent and whether barriers in hiring may be keeping skilled candidates from getting an opportunity to show what they can do.

💙 Happy ECE Appreciation Day!

Today, we're celebrating our incredible Resource Consultants at KW Habilitation and the important role they play in supporting children, families and early learning professionals across Waterloo Region.

Our Resource Consultants work alongside educators in licensed child care programs to help create inclusive early learning environments where children of all abilities can learn, grow and belong.

They're also the team behind our Infant and Child Development Program, working with families to support children's development during those important early years.

Their knowledge, compassion and commitment to inclusion make a difference every day, not only for the children and families they work with, but for the entire early learning community.

Thank you to our Resource Consultants for everything you do to help give children a strong start! 💙

Finding a job doesn't have to be something you figure out alone.

At KW Career Compass, employment support starts with the person: their skills, interests, experiences and goals. Depending on where someone is in their employment journey, that support can look different.

It might mean:
→ Building job-readiness skills
→ Creating a résumé and cover letter
→ Practising for interviews
→ Exploring job opportunities
→ Connecting with employers
→ Preparing to start a new job
→ Job coaching and on-the-job support, when available

The path to employment isn't the same for everyone. The right support can help someone build skills, navigate barriers and take meaningful steps toward the work they want to do. This National Disability Employment Awareness Month, we're highlighting the role accessible, individualized employment support can play in creating more inclusive workplaces and communities.

There’s more to what someone brings to the workplace than what fits on a résumé. For National Disability Employment Awareness Month, we’re joining the Ontario Disability Employment Network’s One Thing You Won’t Find on My Resume challenge.

Finding the right person for a job isn’t only about credentials or what’s written on a page. It’s also about recognizing the strengths, perspectives and experiences people bring with them.

Nearly 1 in 3 employed people with disabilities in Canada are overqualified for their jobs. That means skills, experience and potential are already there. The opportunity is making sure they’re recognized.

This October, National Disability Employment Awareness Month is encouraging employers to take a closer look at how they identify, develop and retain talent.

At KW Career Compass, we work with job seekers to identify their strengths, build their skills and pursue meaningful employment. We also work with employers to help create more inclusive workplaces where people have opportunities to contribute and grow.
