Marillac Place Marillac Place supports new mothers and mother to be experiencing homelessness in the Waterloo Region.

Mothers who come to Marillac Place receive 24 hour guidance and support, continue their education and are enabled with the life-skills they need to care for themselves and their child. Marillac Place can accommodate 10 mothers and 11 babies at one time.

Inside, you’ll find a former resident’s heartfelt poem, a $300,000 multi-year commitment from a valued corporate partner, the success of our Baby Bottle Campaign, and a new-to-us van helping us support moms and babies. There’s a lot to celebrate!

Save the date: Concert and Silent Auction, Sunday, October 18 🎶

Join us at Parkminster United Church for an evening of East Coast and Irish music with the band Second String, in support of our work and the amazing work at Reception House.

The band is performing free of charge, and all proceeds go to both organizations through Parkminster's Outreach Committee.

Trauma doesn't disappear when someone finds housing. For many of the mothers who come to Marillac Place, healing is an ongoing process, one that happens in small moments: a staff member who listens without judgment, a meal that isn't rushed, a bedtime routine that finally feels safe.

That's what trauma-informed care means to us. It's not a program add-on, it's the lens we use for everything, from how we welcome someone through our doors to how we support them after they've moved on. It means meeting people where they are, and building trust through consistent, compassionate care.

None of this is possible without the people who believe in this work. When you support Marillac Place, you're not just funding a bed or a meal, you're helping create the kind of safety that lets a mother breathe a little easier, and a child feel a little more secure. Last week, current and past Marillac Place residents and their children came together for an afternoon at the Donkey Sanctuary of Canada. There were donkey cuddles, lots of laughter, and the chance to catch up with familiar faces and meet new ones. 🫏

Thanks to the generosity of local community partners, Marillac Place has purchased a used van to support young women and their babies as they transition from homelessness to independent living.

Through our AfterCare program, mother-led families receive ongoing support as they build stability, connection, and a sense of belonging in their communities.

Marillac Place staff will use the van to support women and babies in the AfterCare program as they navigate systems and services that can be difficult to access — from medical appointments and housing opportunities to essential community services.

This is what community support looks like in action. 💙

We are deeply grateful to KC Rotary, Rotary Club of Kitchener-Westmount, Mary Bales Fund held at the Waterloo Region Community Foundation, and Zonta Club of Kitchener - Waterloo for coming together to make this possible.

And thank you to Heffner Toyota for helping find and prepare the van for its new role with Marillac Place.

Today, we recognize Orange Shirt Day and the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.

We wear orange as a symbol of remembrance and respect for Residential School survivors and to honour the children who did not return home.

We acknowledge that the harms of Residential Schools didn't end when those schools closed. Through the Sixties Scoop and child welfare systems today, Indigenous children have continued to be separated from their families, communities, and cultures at disproportionately high rates.

At Marillac Place, our work takes place within this history; supporting families well means understanding the systems and experiences that have shaped their lives.

We're committed to listening, learning, and reflecting on our responsibilities to reconciliation, so we can better support the Indigenous mothers and children who may need our services.

We’re thrilled and grateful to announce a milestone investment from the Lyle S. Hallman Foundation over three years.

The funding will help sustain Marillac Place’s 24/7 transitional shelter for women who are pregnant or parenting a child under two, while supporting the vision for a new housing and supportive care continuum for mother-led families living in deep poverty.

Thank you, Lyle S. Hallman Foundation, for this meaningful commitment to Marillac Place and to the women and children who rely on us.

We are deeply grateful to two longstanding members of our Board who have recently completed their terms. Since joining the Board in 2016, both have given generously of their time, shared their wisdom and experience, and brought tremendous care and commitment - all in support of our work serving homeless women and their babies.

Sam Feener served a term as Board President and has consistently provided thoughtful leadership through her work on the Governance and HR Committees.

Alun Masterton has been a dedicated contributor through the Governance and Finance Committees, including serving multiple terms as Treasurer.

Sam and Alun, your commitment and leadership have helped shape Marillac Place over the past decade. Thank you for all that you have done for and with us.

We are grateful to have been invited to participate in multiple events last week, including The March of 1,000 Umbrellas organized by the United Way Waterloo Region Communities and Take Back the Night, hosted by Sexual Assault Support Centre of Waterloo Region .

The March of 1,000 Umbrellas highlighted the vital network of social services in our region and the overlapping crises facing individuals and families. Take Back the Night brought community members together to raise awareness and march against sexual assault, domestic abuse, and gender-based violence.

Marillac Place is proud to stand alongside community organizations, partners, and members who are raising awareness, speaking out, and coming together around these important issues.
