- most items are only available for pickup
- a variety of small items (books and thin art) are available to ship
- pickup times are on Nov 30 and December 1 and 5.
- funds raised help us run our 2027 programs

Snapping turtles are thought to live more than 100 years and take upwards of 20 years to reach sexual maturity. This, combined with low survival rate of eggs and hatchlings, is one reason the Snapping turtle is listed as a species of Special Concern.

In fact, it is estimated that it takes about 1500 eggs and 59 years to replace one lost adult Snapping turtle. Snapping turtles lay a clutch of 6-104 eggs that will hatch within 80-90 days.

Let’s get talk about some myths about our Ontario local common snapping turtle

Perpetuating myths about their ‘aggression’ can further put this species down the road to extinction as it prevents people from helping them.

Let’s set some things straight - yes they are intimidating to help and if you are not comfortable or it is not safe you should prioritize your self. However, with a little knowledge you can easily stay safe and help these living dinosaurs.

Did you know the bottom shell of a turtle (the plastron) is also a way to identify the turtle species?

Although not seen regularly? If you are helping a turtle across a road you can take a quick look at the plastron to double check the species.

Like every year, we’re gonna have an autumn fundraiser to help us budget and plan for our Turtle conservation and education activities for 2027

The last two years we’ve had really amazing art galleries and wonderful local artists creating beautiful Turtle artwork for us. This year we will be having an online silent auction that includes some beautiful Turtle artwork, a realistic turtle model, nature resources, and more!

The auction will be run from 📆 November 22 to November 29. Lots of time to check out the items and make sure you’re the highest bidder on the ones that you’re interested in.

There will be options for 📍 local pick up both in the city centre (near the Kingston centre) as well as north of the 401 in Elginburg. Some items will be available for shipping, but not everything.

With all the hatchlings we’ve seen over the last month we thought it was a great time to challenge tour hatchling identification skills.

If you’re like us you find hatchlings a little harder to identify than their adult versions.

Blandings turtles don’t have as domed of a shell and their plastron (bottom shell) isn’t as clearly black and yellow blotched.

Map turtles appear to have quite a long tail which can make them look like a snapper.
