Thank You to Our Volunteers

Today, we would like to express our sincere gratitude to all of our volunteers who helped make kites for children and contributed to a wonderful International Play Day celebration.

The Afghan Society of Halifax proudly contributed more than 200 handmade kites for children to enjoy. Through this activity, children learned how to make and fly kites, with many of them creating 5 to 7 kites throughout the event.

It was a wonderful experience for families to spend time together flying kites with their children. Seeing the joy, excitement, and smiles on the children’s faces made the day truly special.

Thank you to all the volunteers, partner organizations, and families who participated and helped make this event a great success. Your dedication and support brought happiness to many children and created lasting memories for our community.

Hello everyone 🌿

Dear family and friends,

We are organizing a fun kite-flying event on June 6, 2026. You are all warmly invited to join us from 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM.

This program is great for everyone’s well-being—both adults and youth—and it’s a wonderful chance to relive the beautiful memories of childhood.

We are also looking for volunteers, as in previous years, to help children with making and flying kites.

✨ This event is completely free.

The cherry blossom trees in High Park were gifted in 1959 from Tokyo to Toronto as a symbol of friendship and appreciation.
Around 2,000 trees were initially donated, with many planted in High Park. Over the years, additional trees were added through community efforts and special projects.
Today, these cherry blossoms have become a major spring attraction, drawing thousands of visitors each year to enjoy their beauty. 🌸

Today, we participated in a Liberal policy event in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, where we had meaningful discussions on key issues affecting our communities: healthcare, affordable housing, and transportation access.

Healthcare
We focused on improving access and addressing staffing shortages. Long wait times remain a serious concern, and there is a strong need to retain doctors and nurses, especially in rural areas. We also emphasized strengthening the public healthcare system, expanding mental health services, and creating pathways for internationally trained professionals to contribute to the workforce.

Affordable Housing
Housing continues to be a major challenge, particularly with rising rents and limited supply. We discussed the importance of increasing non-market and co-op housing, strengthening tenant protections, and supporting faster, more efficient housing development to meet growing demand.

Transportation Access
Transportation is closely linked to both affordability and opportunity. Key priorities include improving public transit, enhancing connections for rural communities, and ensuring transportation is accessible, reliable, and affordable for everyone.

Today, we had a productive meeting with Miss Nicole Mosher, Council Relations and Community Liaison from the Halifax Regional Municipality (HRM). During the meeting, we discussed a range of important topics, including community benefits, recreational programs and activities, and effective approaches to operating community spaces across the province.

The conversation provided valuable insights into how community organizations can better engage residents, enhance programming, and create inclusive and sustainable spaces that serve diverse populations. We also explored potential opportunities for collaboration and support to strengthen community initiatives.

Overall, the meeting was informative and constructive, and we look forward to applying the knowledge gained to improve our services and community engagement efforts.
