The Passover wasn't just a historical event. It was a shadow of the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world. Join me as I take a look at how we see the Gospel in a door frame.

Genesis 22 is one of the hardest passages in the Bible to read. A father told to offer his only son.

But there's more going on than we may have been taught. Abraham wasn't blindly following orders. He was in a covenant with God, and he had good reason to believe God would make a way.

Every detail of that three day walk up the mountain is a picture of another Father, another Son, and another hill.

Genesis 22:14 NLT Abraham named the place Yahweh-Yireh (which means "the LORD will provide"). To this day, people still use that name as a proverb: "On the mountain of the LORD it will be provided."

The Bible is like Shrek. It's got layers.
And the deeper you go the more Jesus you find.
Joseph was betrayed by his brothers for pieces of silver. Falsely accused. Thrown into a pit. Then raised up to the right hand of the most powerful ruler in the world. He became the saviour of the very people who betrayed him.
Sound familiar?
Joseph's story was written 1800 years before Jesus was born and it was already telling His story.
We're starting a new series called Shadows and Substance — looking at people and events in the Old Testament that were pointing to Jesus centuries before He arrived.
My hope is that we see Jesus better and our faith grows as we look at familiar stories.

Eight weeks. Eight people who had every reason to quit and didn't.
And now the One the whole series was pointing toward.
Jesus didn't just show us how to hold on. He held on for us. Through the garden. Through the cross. Through the darkness of being forsaken, so we never would be.
Just as we were the joy set before Him, He is the joy set before us.
That's who we're keeping on for. And that's who's cheering us home.

They walked away. Hope in pieces. Done with Jerusalem, done with the whole thing. Just two ordinary people heading home after the worst weekend of their lives.

And Jesus fell into step beside them.

They didn't recognize Him. But their hearts were burning the whole way.

The Emmaus road story isn't about people who held on heroically. It's about people who gave up and went home; and Jesus went with them anyway.

If you've ever had a "we had hoped" moment I hope this talk encourages you.

"Weren't our hearts burning within us as he talked with us on the road?" Luke 24:32 NLT

Most of us have a thorn. Something we've prayed about repeatedly and the answer keeps being no.
Paul begged God three times. Three times. And God said no; but He also said something that has carried people through some of the hardest seasons of their lives.
"My grace is all you need. My power works best in weakness."
This week's talk is honest about what it feels like when God doesn't fix what we asked Him to fix, and what He does instead.

He called down fire from heaven. He outran a chariot. He stood alone against 450 prophets of Baal and won.

And then one woman sent him a threatening message and he ran into the wilderness and asked God to let him die.

Same man. Forty eight hours apart.

Elijah's collapse wasn't a failure of faith. It was a human being running on empty. And what God did about it is worth paying attention to.

God loves you because that's why.

Not because of your track record. Not because you've earned it. Just because He does.

David found that out in his worst year. This week's talk is about what happened when he finally stopped running and brought it all to God.

Moses was given, essentially, an impossible task. When he objected God simply said, "I will be with you." Turns out that was enough. Might be enough for you and I, too.

Here comes the dreamer ... let's kill the dream. Joseph's story might resonate with some of us. People trying to bring us down, get in our way, ruin our plans. But God has an answer for that that we see in the life of Joseph. You can't touch this!
