Wildfire smoke can change quickly — be ready to respond. The Air Quality Health Index (AQHI) makes it easy to understand local air quality during wildfire smoke events. Rated on a scale from 1 to 10+, the AQHI provides clear health guidance for both the general public and those more at-risk — helping you decide when to adjust outdoor activities or take extra precautions. Because conditions can shift throughout the day, the AQHI is updated regularly so you can make informed choices to protect your health.

Stay informed. Stay prepared. Breathe easier. 💙

Wildfire danger depends on factors like the moisture in fine fuels — leaves, needles, and small twigs. In Alberta, risk is typically highest in spring, after snow melts and before vegetation greens up. Everyone plays a role in preventing wildfires. Campfires, OHVs, and agricultural burning can all spark fires if not managed carefully. Before leaving a fire: soak it, stir it, soak it again. Small actions help protect our forests, communities, and air quality.

Wildfire smoke can travel hundreds or thousands of kilometres from the fire zone. During heavy smoke conditions, it is extremely important that Albertans take actions to protect their health. People in areas with smoke should limit time outdoors and listen to their body. If you experience symptoms of smoke exposure, consider reducing or stopping strenuous outdoor activities.
