Jewish Federation of Edmonton

Jewish Federation of Edmonton The Jewish Federation of Edmonton is the hub of Jewish Edmonton and is here to strengthen relationships within our community and beyond.

We are committed to building a strong, vibrant & enduring Jewish community in Edmonton, across Alberta, in Israel and throughout the world by fostering the values, practices & traditions that sustain & enrich Judaism & the Jewish people. One gift to the Federation touches more lives than any other gift you can make. We strive to care for your safety, the vulnerable and the future of our community.

The ideals that motivate Federations are the precious heritage of our Jewish people. Our parents and grandparents brought these ideals to this country and we are charged with keeping them alive to hand on to our children and grandchildren. United and diverse, traditional and innovative, giving and accepting, the Jewish Federation of Edmonton celebrates the uniqueness of its members and, like a family, care for their own. Please understand that we do not respond to messages on Shabbat or during Jewish holidays.

This week’s Shabbat message from CEO Stacey Leavitt-Wright reflects on the importance of strong leadership, thoughtful governance, and collective advocacy at a time when it matters most.

From the Talmud Torah Society AGM to national advocacy efforts, this past week highlighted how local leadership and coordinated action can make a real difference—strengthening security, advancing our shared interests, and supporting Jewish communities across Canada.

We also welcome Vladi, Alberta’s new regional security director, and recognize community leaders who continue to step up locally and nationally.

As always, we are grateful to be part of a community that shows up—with care, commitment, and a shared sense of responsibility.

Wishing everyone a peaceful Shabbat.

Since the Hamas-led October 7 attacks, our seven community organizations have consistently called for urgent government action to confront Canada’s antisemitism crisis.

Today’s passage of the Combatting Hate Act is an important step forward, providing law enforcement and prosecutors with additional tools, including:
✅ New intimidation and obstruction offences to protect access to places of worship and community institutions.
✅ A new hate crime offence that imposes stronger penalties when crimes are motivated by hatred.
✅ A new offence targeting the wilful promotion of hatred through the public display of hate symbols and symbols of listed terrorist entities.

Now that the Combatting Hate Act is set to become law, it must serve as a catalyst for stronger enforcement to better protect communities and hold offenders accountable.

Josh Miller’s latest project is bringing a powerful moment from history to life—and earning him recognition as the 2026 Earl Parker Award recipient.

In The Speech, Josh uses animation, humour, and storytelling to explore how to confront antisemitism without amplifying it. Inspired by a real-life moment involving Theodore Roosevelt, the film speaks to challenges that feel just as relevant today.

Alongside his creative vision, the project has also attracted notable talent, including acclaimed actor Elliott Gould.

As Shabbat approaches, we’re reflecting on a feeling many have shared in recent weeks — that this moment feels different.

In this week’s message, Becky Saegert explores what’s behind that shift: a growing sense of momentum, connection, and possibility as we look ahead.

From thoughtful conversations to meaningful engagement across the city, people are stepping forward in new ways. That energy is helping bring the Oshry | Kipnes Jewish Community Centre to life—not just as a building, but as a place where connection, learning, and belonging can grow.

Opportunities like this don’t come along often. When they do, they invite us to consider how we want to be part of what comes next.
