As we prepare for the High Holy Days, Chevra Kadisha of Edmonton and Edmonton Beth Shalom invite the community to take part in a meaningful tradition of remembrance.

In the days between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, Jews have long visited the graves of family members and community builders in a custom known as Kever Avot ("the graves of the ancestors"). It is a time to remember those who are no longer with us and bring their memory into the new year.

Together, we will recite psalms, El Malei Rachamim, and Kaddish before placing a stone on every grave in the cemetery. This simple but powerful custom symbolizes our ongoing connection to those who came before us.

There will also be time to visit the graves of your own loved ones.

Your presence will add to the sacredness of the day as we honour the generations who built our community.

The first week for Alma and Ofri, our Edmonton Shinshinim, has been very busy with getting to know their host families, visiting Edmonton Talmud Torah Society and Temple Beth Ora.

Are you interested in spending time with Alma and Ofri? We are inviting community members to connect with this year's cohort. You can host them for a Shabbat dinner or holiday meal, invite them to join a family outing, or having them stay in your home for a weekend when their host family may be out of town.

When Yana Pysarenko and her family briefly returned to Spain, they thought they might be leaving Edmonton for good.

Then her younger son asked a simple question: "Mom, where's synagogue here?"

That question helped the family realize how important it was for their children to grow up connected to Jewish life, traditions, and community. Today, their sons attend Talmud Torah School, and support from Jewish Federation of Edmonton's Integrated Bursary Program has helped make Jewish education accessible as they rebuild their lives after fleeing Ukraine.

Over the coming year, Alma and Ofri will become familiar faces throughout our Jewish community, sharing their experiences as young Israelis, building connections, and bringing their energy and perspective to programs and events across Edmonton.

We are thrilled to have them here and can't wait for you to get to know them.

Trailblazing women inspire change.

This week's Shabbat message from CEO Stacey Leavitt-Wright reflects on four remarkable women whose stories demonstrate the power of leadership, resilience, advocacy and philanthropy: Dolly Parton, Lisa Miller, Mandy Damari, and Liat Cohen Raviv.

From PJ Library and Jewish literacy, to volunteer leadership in our community, to advocacy for hostages and rebuilding northern Israel, their examples remind us that meaningful change rarely happens alone. It happens when people have the courage to act and bring others with them.

As we launch this year's UJA Campaign, As One, on September 1, we are reminded that generosity becomes even more powerful when it is paired with collective action.
