Only two nights left to visit Chief's Haunted Barn at Abegweit First Nation in Scotchfort 👻

Tonight, Friday, October 30th, the Community will also be putting on their annual fireworks display, starting at 8pm! The Chief's Barn will be open from of 6pm - 10pm (with a short break for the fireworks show).🎆 All are welcome!

🌿 Our IRM team recently spent a day in Enmore to continue their work with Black Ash, in collaboration with the Lennox Island First Nation Natural Resources Team.

Since the spring, the teams have been identifying, tagging, and mapping Black Ash trees throughout the area while monitoring for signs of Emerald Ash Borer, an invasive insect that (thankfully) has not yet been detected on PEI, yet!

During their latest visit, the team checked the mapped trees for seed production. While no seeds were found this year, they plan to return next season and hope to collect seeds to grow new Black Ash seedlings in partnership with local nurseries.

Black Ash is a culturally significant species for the Mi'kmaw people and this work supports the protection and future growth of Black Ash on Epekwitk for generations to come. 🌱

Step into the dark for a frightful evening at the Chief’s Haunted Barn, October 16-31, 2026!

🥫 Admission is FREE with a non-perishable food item that will go to our local food bank.

🕕 Fridays & Saturdays: extended until 10 p.m.

🍫 A canteen is onsite if you need a treat after the scares.

Last week, the MCPEI Health Program had the pleasure of bringing together trauma-informed staff from First Nations communities across Atlantic Canada for a wellness retreat and workshop.

The gathering was hosted by Glenda Wysote-Labillios and her teams at the Aboriginal Heritage Gardens and Sacred Fire Healing Lodge. It gave participants a chance to step away from their day-to-day responsibilities, connect with one another, and focus on their own wellness while continuing the important work of supporting others.

Through Sharing Circles, a Sunrise Ceremony, a Sweat, traditional meals and teachings on the Four Directions and Seven Sacred Teachings, participants shared knowledge, strengthened connections and made space for healing and renewal.

The gathering was called "Aoqoma’tultinej" which means “Let’s help each other” in Mi’kmaw. This name captures the purpose of the gathering: to remind those who care for our communities that they deserve care and support, too.💗

We are incredibly grateful to everyone who took part. A special wela’lioq to Glenda and her team for welcoming everyone and creating such a thoughtful, supportive space for connection, learning and healing.

This gathering was made possible through contributions from Indigenous Services Canada.

Members of our Integrated Resource Team were proud to represent Epekwitk at the Indigenous Mapping Workshop in Vancouver last month!

Together with Natural Resource Staff from Lennox Island First Nation and Abegweit First Nation, Laura, Darcie and Lori travelled across the country to learn new mapping skills that can support the reclamation of Indigenous land and space, share the history of our land, and understand the important role mapping plays in Indigenous Data Sovereignty. 🧭 🗺️

This is all part of our GIS (Geographic Information System) Mapping work, which aims to guide better decision-making and champion environmental stewardship.

The MCPEI PRIDE program would like to extend our heartfelt appreciation to the Alternative Caregivers who provide love and support to children and youth from Lennox Island First Nation and Abegweit First Nation 🧡

Alternative Caregivers play an essential role in supporting children and families by providing alternative placements for children at risk of being placed in the provincial child protection system. Their commitment helps children maintain meaningful connections to their families, Communities, and culture while promoting stability, belonging, and positive outcomes.

Last month, we had the wonderful opportunity to show our appreciation by hosting a special event at Island Hill Farm Inc, aka “The Cutest Place on Earth.” 🐑 🐇

Events like this give Caregivers a chance to come together, have some fun with their families, and learn more about resources and supports available to them.
