The science-backed process of pasteurization is intentional and essential to providing safe, nutrient-rich milk to the babies who need it most.

At NorthernStar, the donor journey begins with an intake form, followed by thorough screening, physician involvement, and a blood test before milk is collected. Every step plays an important role in ensuring that donated human milk is safe for babies to receive.

We believe - and science supports - that human milk is the best option for babies, and that every baby should have access to the life-saving nutrients found in pasteurized donor human milk.

JOIN US this Friday for our INFANT SENSORY DEVELOPMENT Breastfeeding Cafe!

Linda from Bright Little Minds Pediatric Therapy will be leading an engaging session on sensory development in infancy. As an experienced Occupational Therapist, Linda will guide you and your baby through a series of sensory-motor activities while teaching about the eight sensory systems that form the foundation for movement, learning, and everyday function.

From rolling and sitting to crawling and messy play, Linda will explain how these early milestones build the foundation for future development and show the importantce play has in your baby's growth.

Tea, coffee, and snacks will be provided for a great morning out in the community! PLUS a take home goodie bag 💜

Join us this Saturday for a welcoming, behind-the-scenes look at NorthernStar Mothers Milk Bank. Meet members of our team, learn how donated human milk is screened, processed and pasteurized, and see how our community helps provide donor milk to babies who need it most.

Everyone is welcome - including families, nurses, lactation consultants, doulas, physicians, midwives, students and other perinatal professionals. You do not need to be a milk donor to attend. 💜

In celebration of World Breastfeeding Week, we want to end this week with some of the remarkable science behind human milk and how its composition changes over time.
Did you know human milk changes throughout the day?

Human milk is a dynamic biological fluid influenced by the body’s circadian rhythm. Studies have found that milk cortisol is generally higher during the daytime, while melatonin rises at night. Some amino acids, nutrients and immune components may also vary over a 24-hour period.

Researchers are studying whether these time-of-day signals may contribute to an infant’s developing circadian rhythm, but their precise effects on infant sleep and development are not yet fully understood.

Daily variation is only one part of the story. Human milk also changes across the stages of lactation, over the course of milk removal and as a baby grows.

During World Breastfeeding Week, we celebrate the knowledge, support and continuing research that help us better understand the complexity of human milk. 💜
