Culturally Speaking: Calgary General Hospital, Its Part in the Calgary Story is coming to Heritage Park on Oct. 14! 🏥

From Calgary’s early cottage hospital, now replicated at Heritage Park, to the sandstone Calgary General Hospital and its later Bridgeland locations, the hospital played an important role in the city’s growth and the health of its residents.

Join retired nurse and longtime Bridgeland resident Deb Lee as she shares the history she uncovered while working to preserve and tell the story of the General.

Homeschooler Days bring lessons to life at Heritage Park! 📚✨

Trade the classroom for Canada’s largest living history museum, where students can explore history, science, art and culture through interactive, curriculum-linked programs led by knowledgeable costumed interpreters.

It’s a full day of hands-on learning, curiosity and discovery in a setting unlike any other.

🎒 Grades 1–7
🎟️ $55.95 per student, GST exempt
👨‍👩‍👧 One complimentary guardian per student

The Selkirk is under wraps, but it hasn’t left the station! 🚂

If you’ve passed Heritage Park along 14th Street lately, you might have noticed Selkirk No. 5931 behind scaffolding and protective wrapping. There’s some important work happening underneath, thanks to generous donors who helped raise approximately $67,000!

Specialist contractor Envirotech is stabilizing and repainting the boiler cladding and parts of the cab. This is conservation work, rather than a full restoration or mechanical overhaul, helping us care for one of only two surviving Selkirk locomotives.

Removing the old paint revealed more corrosion than the team could see from the surface, showing just how much this work is needed.

If Calgary’s weather cooperates, we’re hoping for a big reveal by mid to late October. 👀 Stay tuned for more photos and updates!

The History Keepers Tour goes where a regular visit to Heritage Park can’t. 👀

Step behind the scenes of a working history museum and discover the people, places and stories that keep history alive.

Guests can explore spaces not normally open to the public, see historic artifacts and animals up close, and hear directly from Heritage Park staff and interpreters about the work happening behind the scenes. And because each tour is shaped by the projects, specialists and seasonal activity happening that day, no two experiences are exactly the same.

Think of it as an insider look at Heritage Park, filled with hidden spaces, unexpected discoveries and stories most guests never get to hear.

Dancing in Their Honour: Truth & Reconciliation Pow Wow welcomed an incredible turnout for the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. 🧡

Throughout the day, guests gathered for the Indigenous Market, Music is Medicine, the flag-lowering ceremony and an evening Pow Wow filled with drumming, dancing, culture and community connection.

Thank you to everyone who joined Heritage Park to honour residential school Survivors, remember the children who never returned home and recognize the lasting impact of the residential school system on Indigenous families and communities.

Heritage Park is grateful to the Elders, dancers, drum groups, performers, speakers, artists, vendors and community members who shared their knowledge, voices and traditions. A special thank you also goes to the Blackfoot Confederacy and Tourism Calgary for helping make the gathering possible.

Reconciliation is ongoing, and Heritage Park remains committed to listening, learning and creating space for Indigenous voices throughout the year.

National Day for Truth and Reconciliation at Heritage Park 🧡

On Wednesday, Sept. 30, Heritage Park will bring community together for a day of reflection, learning, culture and connection, culminating in Dancing in Their Honour: Truth & Reconciliation Pow Wow.

Throughout the day, guests can experience Indigenous music, dance, drumming, art, food and storytelling while honouring residential school Survivors, remembering the children who never returned home and recognizing the generations of Indigenous families and communities who continue to be affected by the residential school system.

Wednesday, Sept. 30
10 a.m. – 9 p.m.

Event schedule:
🧡 10 a.m. – 9 p.m. | Indigenous Market
Discover art, goods and creations from Indigenous vendors, makers and artists.
🧡 4 p.m. | Flag Lowering Ceremony
The ceremony will be led by Sgt. Julian Klyne of the Calgary Police Service, followed by remarks from MLA Naheed Nenshi and Heritage Park leadership, including CEO Lindsay Galloway and Interim CEO Brian Lanier.
🧡 4 – 6 p.m. | Music is Medicine
Enjoy live Indigenous music and performances in Heritage Plaza.
🧡 5 – 5:15 p.m. | DerRic Starlight
See Tsuut’ina Nation comedian, puppeteer and performer DerRic Starlight with his Native puppet characters.
🧡 5:45 p.m. | Introductions and Opening Remarks
Featuring Lee Crowchild, DerRic Starlight and Tyra Wells.
🧡 6 – 9 p.m. | Dancing in Their Honour: Truth & Reconciliation Pow Wow
Grand Entry begins at 6 p.m., followed by an evening of Indigenous dancers and drum groups, including the Blackfoot Confederacy Drum Group, Backroad Bandits Drum Group and Stoney River Drum Group.

Anyone who self-identifies as Indigenous at Heritage Park’s front gates will receive FREE admission. Heritage Park Members and Heritage Club VIPs also receive free admission.

General Admission:
Adults 16+: $14.95
Children ages 3–15: $8.95

Heritage Park is located on Treaty 7 territory and recognizes the deep historical and ongoing connections of the Blackfoot Confederacy, Tsuut’ina Nation, Îyârhe Nakoda Nations and Métis people to this land.

A sleepover in a historic barn? Yeah, this isn’t your average overnight sleepover. 🌙

At Heritage Park’s Youth Sleepover Program, groups can spend the evening exploring the Historical Village, trying old-fashioned crafts and uncovering mystery artifacts. There are even optional ghost stories if your group is feeling brave. 👀(Good thing I'm not going, I can't do scary stories)

After a night in the Burns Barn bunkhouse, they’ll wake up to breakfast, a village scavenger hunt and a visit to Gasoline Alley Museum.

👥 For youth groups ages 5–17, with a minimum of 15 participants
⏰ 6:30 p.m. to 10 a.m. the next morning
🎟️ $85 + GST per participant

What does it take to get food from the field to your table? On October 7, students can find out for themselves at Fun on the Farm! 🌾🐴

This full-day school program lets kids get hands-on with prairie farm life. They can meet the animals, see draft horses and vintage tractors, grind wheat into flour, and step inside a one-room schoolhouse for a 1915 agriculture lesson.

👥 Kindergarten to Grade 6 school groups
