Chag Shavuot Sameach!
Celebrated seven weeks after Pesach, Shavuot marks the giving of the Torah at Mount Sinai and is also a festival of harvest, gratitude, learning, and community.
Shavuot traditions include staying up late for Torah study, hearing the reading of the Ten Commandments, decorating with flowers and greenery, and gathering together over festive meals. Many communities read the Book of Ruth, whose conversion story holds special meaning for many who have chosen to become Jewish.
It is Ashkenazi tradition to enjoy dairy dishes on Shavuot - from cheesecake, cheese blintzes, kugel, ice cream, pizza and every kind of cheesy goodness imaginable!
As we celebrate the giving of the Torah, may this holiday inspire us with learning, connection, sweetness, and joy. Please note that Calgary Jewish Federation will be closed on Friday in observance of Shavuot.
