PCOS has a new name: PMOS.

The condition long known as Polycystic O***y Syndrome is now called Polyendocrine Metabolic Ovarian Syndrome.

In Canada, PCOS affects an estimated 1 in 10 women.

The name change matters because PCOS is not definied by cysts only. Many people with the condition do not have abnormal ovarian cysts, and the old name often narrowed public and clinical understanding of the condition. People with PCOS often experience problems with hormones, metabolism, skin, mental health, fertility, as long-term health issues.

The new name, PMOS, better reflects what this condition is: a complex hormonal and metabolic disorder.

The Society of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists of Canada shared that PMOS recognizes the condition as more than ovarian cysts and helps address misconceptions, delayed diagnoses, and gaps in care.

This is why language matters.

A more accurate name can support earlier diagnosis, better research, more informed care, and greater recognition of the full-body impact of this condition.

Surround yourself with women who say your name in rooms full of opportunities.

It is more than a beautiful sentiment. Research suggests it matters.

A recent Canadian study by Zhou et al. examined the career paths and professional networks of more than 19,000 senior employees across 772 publicly traded Canadian companies between 2000 and 2022. The researchers found that women often need broader and more influential networks than men to reach comparable board-level positions, even when they have similar qualifications and career experience.

The study also found that professional connections between women can play an important role in advancement. Women who were connected to other female leaders were more likely to move into director-level roles, suggesting that mentorship, sponsorship, and meaningful connection are not just “nice to have.” They are part of how barriers begin to shift.

The Honourable Louise Arbour has been named Canada’s 31st Governor General.

She brings a remarkable legacy of public service, legal leadership, and human rights advocacy to this national role.

She is a:

- Former Supreme Court of Canada justice
- Former UN High Commissioner for Human Rights
- Former Chief Prosecutor for the International Criminal Tribunals for the former Yugoslavia and Rwanda
- Companion of the Order of Canada

The Honourable Arbour’s work has helped advance accountability for sexual violence in international law, supported reforms in women’s corrections, and called for institutional change in response to sexual misconduct in the Canadian Armed Forces.

This moment is a meaningful reminder of what is possible when women’s leadership is recognized at the highest levels of public life.

As an organization honoured to hold Viceregal Patronage under Governor General Mary Simon, we hope to continue this important relationship as we carry forward our work to advance equality, leadership, and representation in Canada.

Across generations, women, mothers, grandmothers, aunties, caregivers, mentors, chosen family, and community leaders have helped shape a more equal Canada, often through quiet persistence, everyday advocacy, and love that stretches far beyond one home.

Mother’s Day reminds us that care has always been part of courage.

The Famous Five were daughters, mothers, friends, neighbours, and changemakers. Their legacy reminds us that progress is not made by one kind of woman, in one kind of family, or through one kind of leadership.

Happy Mother’s Day to all the women who nurture possibility, challenge barriers, and help the next generation believe they belong at the table where decisions are made.

"Because you need to see a physical manifestation of your dream.

There is something about seeing someone who looks like you that makes it more tangible. You could see it. You can touch it. It gives you the possibility to look through your imagination and you know what...redefine yourself.

Because I needed to redefine myself at 128 Washington Street and the imagination is this infinite playing field where you can just, you can be reborn. And that’s what I saw in Ms. Tyson and her excellence. I saw a way out.

You gotta see a way out. Someone has to provide a portal."

Viola Davis on why representation matters.

The 2026 nominations for the Governor General's Awards in Commemoration of the Persons Case are now open.

These awards celebrate those continuing the work that began with the Persons Case in 1929. They honour the legacy of the Famous Five, who challenged the idea that women were not “persons” under the law. Their courage still echoes today in the people working for equality in their communities.

These awards recognize individuals, including youth, who are removing barriers and creating space for women, girls, and gender-diverse people across Canada. Recipients include activists, organizers, advocates, and changemakers from many fields.

Progress happens because people choose to challenge the status quo.

Recent recipients include leaders like Dr. Sandra DeLaronde, Marjolaine Étienne, Damineh Akhavan, Dr. Aditi Sivakumar, and Gemma Hickey. Their work strengthens equality for Indigenous women and communities, gender-diverse people, and the next generation of leaders.

Do you know someone making a difference?

Nominate them today.
