Braeside Community Association led by resident Jim Jenkins, salvaged large metal poles that would have otherwise hit the landfill, and created a birdhouse sanctuary for local winged-residents. The birdhouses were constructed, painted, and installed by community volunteers, and one home is already in use!

This project came about when another community association reached out for ideas on repurposing unused metal poles, and Jim stepped in with an idea.

Our online member forum is the perfect place to build community connections like these. Members use the forum to share ideas, collaborate on projects, access resources, and post community needs, wants, offers, and giveaways. Visit our website to join & learn more!

🐝The Friends Helped Crescent Heights Community Association Grow Community on Goose Bear Hill! 🐝

More than 80 neighbours kicked things off by building bee hotels, followed by native seed planting, plug planting, and new site features—including a bench, garbage can, and solar light. Even with water restrictions and permitting delays, volunteers stayed committed, creating a healthier space for pollinators and a more welcoming spot for the community.

Last week we hosted our 65th Onward event, celebrating the Federation’s 65th Anniversary and the launch of our Good Places space!

Whether it’s our AGM, Action Awards Night, in-person workshops, or this launch party, we love seeing folks from different organizations make connections and share resources. Here’s a sweet story sent from My Bowness after the launch:

Molly, who won one of our Little Free Libraries in the raffle, gifted it to Mainstreet Bowness Business Improvement Area to install as part of their Good Places project. When rainy weather changed plans for a student group from Discovering Choices Bowness they pivoted to painting the little free library indoors instead — and turned it into something incredible. Using just a few colours, they created custom designs on the spot and made the most of a rainy morning.

This is exactly what Good Places is all about — connection, creativity, and community in action. We can’t wait to see this Little Free Library being used in the community.💛

Many of our core programs and services began developing throughout the 1980s.

We continued to foster relationships between community associations and City Council and contributed our expertise to civic and provincial policy. Leaning in to this relationship, in 1984, Mayor Klein issued a proclamation declaring Community Association Membership Week. As community association needs changed, we responded by expanding and diversifying our services. We grew our volunteer trainings and resources, hosted monthly learning sessions, provided education and a platform for community discussions.

What a night! 🎉

Last Friday, community leaders, volunteers, partners, and supporters came together to celebrate two exciting milestones: the Federation's 65th anniversary and the grand opening of Good Places HQ.

Our new space was filled with conversation, creativity, laughter, and connection. Guests explored placemaking activities, captured memories at the photobooth, enjoyed great food and drinks, and learned more about the work happening across Calgary's communities.

As we reflected on 65 years of supporting grassroots organizations, one message stood out: volunteers are the heart of Calgary's communities. Their leadership, passion, and commitment continue to create vibrant neighbourhoods, meaningful connections, and lasting local impact.

The opening of Good Places HQ marks the beginning of an exciting new chapter. This space will provide community volunteers and grassroots groups with the learning, mentorship, resources, and support they need to bring great ideas to life and create more welcoming community places across Calgary.

Thank you to everyone who joined us to celebrate our past, our present, and the future we're building together.
