170 years ago, on August 27, 1856, Ivan Franko was born in the Lviv region.
A towering figure of Ukrainian and global culture, Franko was a prolific writer and thinker — an acclaimed Ukrainian author, poet, playwright, journalist, publisher, philosopher, sociologist, political scientist, historian, economist, and civic and political leader.
🔷 Over 40 years of creative work, Franko produced thousands of works — on average, a new piece every two days.
🔷 Franko showed extraordinary abilities from an early age. By the time he was in high school, he had built a library of more than 500 books and was reading Shakespeare in German translation.
🔷 He was arrested three times for his civic and political activities.
🔷 He knew 14 languages and translated works into Ukrainian from 48 languages, including ancient and Eastern languages. His contemporaries called him an “academy in one person.”
🔷 In 1890, he became a co-founder of the Ruthenian-Ukrainian Radical Party, the first Ukrainian political party.
🔷 Despite the Soviet-era label of “atheist,” Franko was a deeply religious person. He studied religion and the Bible and translated biblical texts into Ukrainian.
🔷 During the last seven years of his life, paralysis of his right hand forced him to write with his left hand or dictate his works.
🔷 Franko was nominated for the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1916. However, the prize is awarded only to living recipients, and Franko died just a few months before the potential recognition.
🔷 His son, Petro Franko, was one of the founders of Plast and later served as a sotnyk (company commander) in the Ukrainian Sich Riflemen.

170 років тому, 27 серпня 1856 року, на Львівщині народився Іван Якович Франко — всесвітньо відома знакова постать, титан праці й думки, видатний український письменник, поет, драматург, публіцист, видавець, філософ, соціолог, політолог, історик, економіст, громадський і політичний діяч.
🔷 За 40 років творчої діяльності Франко створив тисячі творів — у середньому новий твір з’являвся кожні два дні.
🔷 Франко мав феноменальні здібності ще з дитинства. Уже в гімназії мав бібліотеку з понад 500 книжок і читав Шекспіра в німецькому перекладі.
🔷 Тричі зазнавав арештів через свою громадську та політичну діяльність.
🔷 Знав 14 мов і перекладав українською твори з 48 мов, зокрема давніх і східних. Його називали "академія в одній особі".
🔷 У 1890 році став співзасновником Русько-Української радикальної партії — першої української політичної партії.
🔷 Попри радянське клеймо "атейста", Франко був глибоко віруючою людиною: цікавився релігією та Святим Письмом, перекладав біблійні тексти українською мовою.
🔷 Останні сім років життя через параліч правої руки писав лівою або диктував свої твори.
🔷 Франка номінували на Нобелівську премію з літератури у 1916 році. Однак премію вручають восени і прижиттєво. Франко помер за кілька місяців до можливого тріумфу.
🔷 Його син Петро Франко був одним із засновників «Пласту» та сотником Легіону Українських січових стрільців.
