Yesterday, our Founder and CEO, Jolene Livingston, and Craig Melton, Executive Director of Development, Calgary and Southern Alberta, had the pleasure of sitting down with the team at the Calgary Drop-In Centre.

It was a wonderful opportunity to learn more about their work and celebrate what we can accomplish together. We could not have asked for a more fitting backdrop for our photo!

Thank you to the DI team for the warm welcome. We look forward to continuing the conversation and supporting folks in our community together!

Last week, our CMO and VP Eastern Canada, Shelley Mayer, travelled to Ottawa for two important days of housing conversations with the Canadian Housing and Renewal Association.

At the CHRA Summit on Housing and the Canadian Economy, Shelley attended a panel of municipal leaders from the Federation of Canadian Municipalities, Timmins, Regina and Halifax, who explored how housing affordability shapes our economy.

She then took part in CHRA Housing on the Hill Day, joining fellow housing leaders from Norfolk Housing Association, Covenant House Toronto and Canadian Centre for Housing Rights - CCHR to meet with parliamentarians and call for policies that help more people across Canada access safe, affordable homes.

Thank you to CHRA for bringing the sector together and to everyone who shared their time, ideas and commitment. We are proud to be part of these important conversations!

From Edmonton to Winnipeg, our Founder and CEO, Jolene Livingston, spent last week at two conferences, joining leaders from across the country in conversations about one shared goal: more affordable homes for Canadians.

At the 2026 Alberta Municipalities conference, Jolene spoke on a panel about how organizations from different sectors can work together to create more affordable homes in Alberta communities.

She then headed to Winnipeg for the Philanthropic Foundations Canada / Fondations philanthropiques Canada National Conference, where she joined a panel of housing and community leaders. Together, they discussed where good housing solutions get stuck and how philanthropy can help move them forward, from supporting policy change to strengthening community infrastructure.

Thank you to the organizers, speakers and attendees who made both events so inspiring. We are proud to be part of a growing community working to make housing more affordable across Canada!

Today, on the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, we honour and remember the survivors of residential schools, the children lost, and all whose lives were forever changed.

This day calls on each of us to reflect, learn and take real action. Truth and reconciliation is a responsibility that extends far beyond one day.

We are grateful to highlight some of the many organizations making a difference in housing for Indigenous communities across the country:

Uquutaq Society
Council of Yukon First Nations
Danakiiwiin on Court LP
Thunder Bay WINGS
Inuka Community
Saskatoon Open Door Society
Cold Lake First Nations
Conklin Resource Development Advisory Committee - CRDAC
The Olive Tree
Elizabeth Fry Society of Calgary
HomeSpace Society
Princen Sammy Foundation

Take the time to learn about their work. Some of these projects are also seeking funding, and you can explore them on Front Door at https://frontdoor.pfah.ca/

Our team has been out connecting, learning and taking part in important conversations about housing and affordability.

Last week, our Founder & CEO, Jolene Livingston, and Craig Melton, Executive Director of Development (Calgary), attended the City of Calgary – Your Local Government’s Housing Summit, where they heard from speakers including former NHL player and coach Ted Nolan. In Edmonton, Jolene and Brooke Rose, Executive Director of Development (Edmonton), attended EndPoverty Edmonton’s Voices of Affordability interactive exhibition.

This week, we are on the road again! Jolene will be attending the 2026 Alberta Municipalities Convention & Trade Show, as well as the Philanthropic Foundations Canada National Conference. Shelley Mayer, CMO & VP Eastern Canada, will be attending CHRA’s Summit on Housing and the Canadian Economy, and Housing on the Hill Day in Ottawa.

If you're at any of these events, we're looking forward to connecting with you!

For Dave, finding a job marked an important step forward. But in Toronto’s costly rental market, that progress also raised a difficult question: could he afford to move on from subsidized housing without losing the stability he had worked to build?

After experiencing unemployment, Dave connected with Yonge Street Mission (YSM), accessing employment support and other services that helped him move forward. While living at YSM’s Genesis Place, he found a construction job and began preparing for independent living. But with rising rents and living costs, taking that next step could mean risking financial hardship.

Dave’s experience helped shape ELEV8 by YSM, a planned mixed-income development designed to help residents build greater financial independence while maintaining their housing stability and connections to community and supports.

For more than 130 years, Yonge Street Mission has worked alongside people experiencing poverty in Toronto, helping individuals build greater stability and move forward.

We recently had the pleasure of connecting with Angela Solomos, VP of Philanthropy at Yonge Street Mission, to learn more about ELEV8 by YSM, a planned 228-unit mixed-income housing development.

Through YSM’s innovative Progress in Place model, residents will be able to build greater financial independence without having to leave their home, community or supports behind as their circumstances change.

Angela also shared how philanthropy can help bring this vision to life:

“The need is huge, and philanthropy is what allows us to be bold. It gives us the ability to move forward, to demonstrate what is possible and to leverage the larger investments that are needed to make projects like this a reality.”

What is the difference between affordable housing, non-market housing and community housing? These terms come up often in conversations about housing, and while they are connected, they each describe something different.

Knowing what they mean helps us better understand the housing system and the different approaches to creating and maintaining housing that meets people’s needs.

Swipe through for a simple breakdown of these three terms!
