Before Legal Aid and other pro bono service entities, a small group of University of Alberta law students recognized a growing need for accessible legal support in Calgary. What began as a summer project in 1971 became the foundation for a lasting commitment to access to justice in our community.

These students saw that many individuals experiencing homelessness and low incomes were unable to access the legal assistance they needed. With the help of volunteer lawyers, community donations, and local supporters, they launched Student Legal Services to help fill that gap.

What started as an eight-week initiative quickly revealed the need for year-round legal services. In 1972, the organization was officially incorporated, continuing to expand its impact through volunteer lawyers, law students, and community partnerships.

In 1977, the organization became known as Calgary Legal Guidance. More than 50 years later, that same mission of making legal support accessible to those who need it most continues to guide our work every day.

A heartfelt thank you to the Calgary Bar Association for their generous donation raised at their annual golf tournament to support our Calgary Community Court (CCC) project. 💙

Because of your support, we’ve been able to:

• Create a basic needs pantry for participants experiencing poverty
• Purchase tablets to improve accessibility at CCC
• Enhance our reception space to better welcome and serve our community

Many of your members already give their time as volunteers—supporting clients through incredibly challenging moments with compassion and dignity. This contribution helps us continue and expand that impact.

In its pilot alone, CCC supported over 800 vulnerable Calgarians—providing legal guidance, connecting people to essential resources, and helping restore trust in systems meant to serve them.

We’re grateful to have you as partners in this work.

This National Volunteer Week, we’re celebrating the people who make our work possible 💙

Meet Giva and Simone—two incredible volunteers who give their time, energy, and heart to support our community.

When asked why they volunteer:

✨ Giva Balasingam: “I am motivated to volunteer with Calgary Legal Guidance because I believe access to legal support should never depend on a person’s financial status. I first learned about CLG through a friend who shared its mission of providing free legal advice to Calgary residents who cannot afford a lawyer, and that introduction affirmed my commitment to service. In my experience, many people seeking help are navigating financial hardship alongside other significant challenges; at CLG, their concerns are heard and taken seriously, and they receive dignified, practical guidance. By contributing my time and skills to this work, I hope to help build a fair and compassionate community where everyone can meaningfully exercise their legal rights.”

✨ Simone Conrad: "I volunteer with CLG because its services address many gaps in access to justice by giving legal advice to individuals who do not have the financial resources to retain a lawyer, and either do not qualify for other programs such as Legal Aid, or who have matters that are not covered by those programs."

In this International Year of the Volunteer, we’re reminded that every act of service—big or small—creates real impact. Thank you, Giva and Simone, for all that you do!
