🖤💛❤️ National Reconciliation Week is a time to learn about our shared histories, cultures, and achievements, and to explore how each of us can contribute to achieving reconciliation in Australia.

This year's theme, All In, is a call for all Australians to commit wholeheartedly to reconciliation every single day. Reconciliation and advancing Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples’ rights isn’t a passive activity, and it is not solely the responsibility of First Nations people.

Reconciliation will not happen by itself, and it will not happen without all of us.

At Hume Riverina Community Legal Service, our vision is a society where all people enjoy equality of opportunity and have equal access to the law. We are committed to reconciliation and to walking alongside Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples as we continue this journey together.

For information on some of the work we undertake with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples please visit, https://hrcls.org.au/bbm/.

Last night's Federal Budget does not do enough to address the urgent need for investment in safety and justice for victim-survivors of domestic violence in regional Australia.
We have been calling for targeted investment of $15.8 million in regional and remote community legal centre family violence and family law services, and an urgent $11.9m to offset the impact of the fuel crisis on people’s access to justice and safety.
We acknowledge the important steps the Federal Government has taken to address intergenerational inequality through tax and trust reform, but these kinds of measures must be supported by investment in a strong, stable safety net of community supports.

đź’¬ Are you safe at home?

This simple question is all it takes to initiate meaningful conversation with someone who may be experiencing family violence.

Anyone can experience family violence. And anyone can help end it. You don’t need to be an expert.

Today we mark, Are You Safe at Home? Day. It's an opportunity to initiate meaningful conversations with people who may be experiencing family violence. To take action all you have to do is ask: Are you safe at home?

For information on how to ask this important question please visit, https://bit.ly/4diGQjE.

🏛️ Prison time isn’t fine.

Thousands of Victorians remain at risk of imprisonment due to old “zombie warrants” issued under laws Parliament has already acknowledged were unjust.

The current pause on enforcement is temporary.

Without lasting reform, Victorians will continue to face imprisonment for unpaid fines.

We’re urgently calling on the Victorian Attorney-General Sonya Kilkenny MP to permanently abolish imprisonment for fines debt.

⛓ Prison time isn’t fine.

Right now, more than 3,000 imprisonment warrants hang over Victorians with unpaid fines. Many of these relate to toll fines.

Many people affected are already experiencing significant disadvantage, including homelessness, family violence and mental illness.

If the Attorney-General does not act urgently, many Victorians in these circumstances risk being sent to prison.

As a member of the Infringement Working Group we are calling on the Victorian Attorney-General Sonya Kilkenny MP to permanently abolish imprisonment for fines debt.

❌ Prison time isn’t fine.

In Victoria, unpaid fines can still lead to imprisonment. Even something as minor as a parking or toll fine could result in time behind bars.

No one should lose their freedom because they can’t afford to pay.

As a member of the Infringement Working Group we are calling on the Victorian Attorney-General Sonya Kilkenny MP to abolish imprisonment for fines debt now.
