The Late Bronze Age was an era of unprecedented wealth and cultural achievement in the area surrounding the Eastern Mediterranean. But around 1100 BCE, kingdoms and whole empires disappeared during the Late Bronze Age collapse. One of the few sources to preserve the riches and sophistication of these vanished civilisations are shipwrecks of trading vessels, that have lain undisturbed on the seabed until modern times. On Wednesday, May 6, AESWA Committee Member John Mirosevich will tell us the thrilling tale of the discovery of the Gelidonya and Uluburun shipwrecks. The cargoes carried by these trading ships will reveal the immense wealth of these ancient civilisations and the complex trade networks that linked them. Please see the flyer for more details.

Ever since ancient times, travellers to Egypt collected mementos of their visits, hoping to bring some of Egypt's magic home with them. During World War I, Anzac soldiers camped on the Giza Plateau also gathered trinkets and antiquities to take home. In most cases, we don't know what the soldiers thought about these objects. However, one exceptional soldier, Frank Kirby, photographed and wrote about his mementos in his letters home. What did the Anzacs think about the antiquities they were collecting and how much did they understand about Egypt and its people? On Wednesday, April 1, AESWA President Dr. Jasmine Day will tell the fascinating story of Frank Kirby's antiquities and examine the Anzacs' interactions with Egypt. Please see the flyer for more details. Everyone welcome, but please message us first to be added to our guest list.
