In Perths central western suburbs lies on of Australia’s largest urban wetland restoration projects. 🦆

Lake Claremont, once a paperbark wetland, has become a critically important wetland for native wildlife and a important recreational place for the local community.

Over the past 20 years, Friends of Lake Claremont have been coordinating major planting projects across the park, as well as promoting local engagement through collaborating with schools, putting on local community events and hosting talks by local experts.

Another initiative of Friends of Lake Claremont has been to get more young people involved in their events and broader governance! The groups now hosts many young people at its busy bees and on its committee!

🌿 Are environmental offsets actually protecting nature — or just part of a series of measures destroying it?

When development can’t be avoided, offsets are supposed to be the last resort — a genuine safeguard, not a loophole. But across Perth’s bushland communities, the concern is growing: offsets are being used as a convenient workaround rather than a meaningful commitment to conservation.
Sites that are too far away. Ecological character that doesn’t match what was lost. Pricing that makes clearing look artificially cheap, and little public information about whether any of it is actually working.

As the Swan Coastal Plain faces mounting pressure, the cumulative loss of irreplaceable urban bushland is adding up — and no offset can bring back what took thousands of years to come to be.

We’ve made a submission to the WA Auditor General’s office, as part of their broader review into environmental offsets calling for stronger avoidance measures, independent oversight, and real transparency. Because if offsets are going to play a role, they need to be credible — not just convenient.

Join us for an important (and free!) evening focused on the future of responsible cat ownership and wildlife protection.

📅 Wednesday 13 May
⏰ 6:00–8:00 pm (talk starts 6:30)
📍 City West Lotteries House, West Perth + online option

With upcoming changes to the State Cat Act, local governments will soon have more power to introduce laws like cat containment and other measures that protect cats, wildlife, and communities. Now is the time to understand what’s coming and how you can help make it happen where you live.

Featuring Dr Bruce Webber, he’rs from a leading conservation expert on how effective local cat laws can be implemented, and how community groups can drive real change.

Whether your area already has cat laws or not, there’s more that can be done. This session will show you how.

Light refreshments provided from 6pm.

Please let us know that you are coming along. You can either RSVP here: https://www.bushlandperth.org.au/event/amending-the-cat-act/ or else email [email protected].

If you can’t make it to West Perth, you can join us online via Zoom. Please email [email protected] to request the Zoom link.

🌱 Need a hand this planting season and keen to get more young people involved with your Friends of Group?

We are partnering with Co-Exist Australia, a youth-led conservation movement connecting 18–30 year olds with nature—and empowering them to protect it. Since 2022, in collaboration with a range of stakeholders, they have held events, from tree planting to clean-ups, hikes to campouts across Australia.

The Co-Exist Perth is looking to collaborate with Friends of Groups on either tree planting events or larger opportunities to support youth-led landcare sites!

If you are interested, please reach out to Co-Exist South and West Community Manager Jessica Ditchfield ([email protected]) or Oscar Jones from the Urban Bushland Council team ([email protected])

The Tuart (Eucalyptus gomphocephala) 🌳

This one of Perth’s largest trees, growing up to 40 metres tall! Once found all along Perths coastline from Lancelin down to Busselton, these woodlands were cleared with the expansion of Perth, and as a result, only 20% of their original extent remains.

Federally listed as critically endangered, some of the largest remaining pockets of these woodlands in central Perth can be found in Bold Park, a 442 ha reserve in Perths western suburbs.

Friends of Bold Park Bushland Inc have been central to maintaining the ecological value of this park and the Tuart woodlands within it. Volunteer led, this group have been working in the park since 1987 when they formed, removing weeds, planting natives and offering a variety of guided walks to educate and connect the local community with this park.
