Earlier this week, Government House Western Australia hosted a very special event to mark the start of National Asthma Week and raise awareness of asthma.

We are incredibly grateful to His Excellency the Honourable Chris Dawson AC APM, Governor of Western Australia, and Mrs Darrilyn Dawson for having us and for their continued support over the years.

Thank you to our friends, collaborators, partners, and the families and individuals who have trusted us to be part of their asthma journey. It is a privilege to support you in living healthier lives and achieving a better quality of life.

Together, we are working towards a Western Australia where everyone can breathe easier. 💙

130km. Two days. One powerful reason. Helping children breathe easier. 💙

To mark the start of National Asthma Week (1 to 7 September), Samantha Laine and her best friend Nicolle are taking on the 'Wheezin for a Reason Hub to Hub Challenge', walking an incredible 130km in just two days to raise funds for Respiratory Care WA.

Their motivation is deeply personal.

"The team at Respiratory Care WA didn't just help Patrick, they supported our whole family. That's why we're doing this walk. If every step we take helps another family find the support we did, then every blister and every kilometre will be worth it."

Every step Samantha and Nicolle take will help Respiratory Care WA continue providing free education, support and services to people living with respiratory conditions across Western Australia.

Asthma affects 1 in 9 Australians, yet too many people are still living with symptoms that go undiagnosed or aren't well managed.

Early diagnosis, education and a personalised asthma action plan can make a life-changing difference.

Whether you wear blue, host a blue morning tea, decorate your workspace or get creative with your own blue-inspired activity, every action helps shine a light on asthma and support those living with the condition.

Some of the most important health conversations don't start in a clinic. They start with a young person.

Through our partnership with Binar Futures and its Health Embassies program, we've seen how young people can be powerful knowledge-sharers, taking what they've learned about respiratory health home to their parents, grandparents, carers and siblings.

At this year's Binar Futures Basketball Tournament and Health Embassy in Albany, we connected with almost 500 participants and family members over two days. As Respiratory Care WA Community Outreach Coordinator Melanie Preen reflected, "What really stood out was hearing young people confidently talk about asthma, triggers and respiratory health months, and sometimes years, after our initial conversations."

This National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Children's Day, we're celebrating the voices, stories and knowledge of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children and young people.

This year's theme, 'Living Our Truth', reminds us that learning doesn't only happen one way, and that when young people are heard, their influence can help shape healthier futures for families, communities and future generations. 💙

"For years, our family felt like we were simply surviving." – PayPay 💙

For mum PayPay, Charlotte, Lorelei and Harrison's asthma made even the simplest everyday moments uncertain, touching every part of their lives—from school to birthday parties and family outings.

Coming to Respiratory Care WA was a turning point.

Meeting Dr Oo, Dr Wilson and the team gave them something they hadn't had for a very long time—confidence and hope.

"For the first time, we felt like we weren't facing it alone."

Today, life looks very different.

"They're sleeping well. They're healthier. They're running, playing, laughing and enjoying life. We're no longer making constant trips to the doctor or hospital, and that weight we've carried for so long has finally started to lift."

That's a wrap on the Binar Futures Basketball Tournament and Health Embassy at Bendat Basketball Centre 🏀💙

A huge thank you to Binar Futures for inviting Respiratory Care WA to be part of such an incredible community event.

Across two days, we had some great yarns with First Nations children and their families, sharing practical asthma tips, answering questions and talking about recognising symptoms, avoiding common triggers and staying active while managing asthma.

Thanks again to Binar Futures for bringing health, education and community together. We can't wait to do it all again in Broome this October! 💙
