Only tradies can build the homes we need. Yet in WA, we’re already about 40,000 workers short.

MBAWA CEO Matt Moran joined 7NEWS Perth to discuss how lengthy visa delays are keeping skilled construction workers out of WA when we need them most.

With the shortage expected to reach more than 120,000 by 2030, we need to train more homegrown tradies and streamline visa approvals to bring in the skilled workers we need.

To build the homes of the future, we need to build our workforce first. 🏠👷

Midland Brick has helped build WA homes for generations.

Demand for clay bricks has outstripped supply in recent years, but Midland Brick says it has increased production over the past year, delivering additional bricks to build around 2,000 more homes.

MBAWA CEO Matt Moran and National President Rob Shaw visited the production line to hear more about the company’s five-year capacity expansion plan to help meet growing demand.

Boosting the supply of essential building materials is a critical part of increasing housing supply and delivering the homes our community needs.

The highlights from last week’s 2026 Master Builders WA Apprentice Awards are in. ✨

What a night it was at Baillie Hill, as WA’s outstanding building and construction apprentices were recognised for their exceptional standards of achievement in their respective trades.

Congratulations to all of our finalists and winners, with a very special mention to the remarkable Tessa Walley from ElectricalGroupTraining, our 2026 WA Apprentice of the Year, who capped off a stunning evening with five awards to her name.

If the calibre of this years’ apprentices is anything to go by, the future of our industry is in safe hands.

Thank you to everyone who joined us and to our event partners ABN Group, CBUS Super, Construction Training Fund, FutureBuild Academy, James Hardie AU, Keystart, Mark Allen Memorial Fund and Midland Brick for making the evening possible.

Taking on an apprentice has never been easier, thanks to the GTO Wage Subsidy.

This initiative supports eligible building and construction businesses to employ more apprentices by subsidising up to 75% of their wages, reducing upfront costs and helping grow the industry workforce.

The expanded subsidy is available from 1 July, but places are limited! You’ll need to act quickly to avoid missing out.
