Reconciliation Memoirs with June Oscar in conversation with Victoria Laurie

June Oscar’s memoir speaks to a lifelong commitment to her people, her Country and the pursuit of justice. A proud Bunuba leader, her work, both in her Kimberley community and nationally, has helped shape the lives of many, particularly First Nations women and girls whose voices she continues to elevate.

Her leadership, grounded in care, responsibility and collective wellbeing, is a powerful reminder of what it means to know your truth and lead with authenticity.

We are honoured to have shared this important conversation.

Reconciliation Australia put the call out for choirs to be ‘All In’ for Voices for Reconciliation 2026 by singing Midnight Oil's classic anthem ‘Beds Are Burning’.

Over 700 choirs answered that call for National Reconciliation Week 2026!

We have loved watching music bring our nation together.

The Zenadth Kes/Torres Strait Islander flag was designed by the late Bernard Namok of Waiben/Thursday Island.

The flag was recognised by the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Commission in June 1992 and has had equal prominence with the Aboriginal flag for more than 30 years as an official flag of Australia under Commonwealth legislation.

The meaning of the Torres Strait Islander flag is represented through:
🟩 Green: Land
🟦 Blue: Sea
⬜ White: Peace
⬛ Black: The Torres Strait Islander peoples

At the centre of the Torres Strait Islander flag is a dhari (headdress) that represents the Torres Strait Islander peoples, and a five-pointed star that represents the five major island groups, and the role of navigation in this sea-faring culture.

Today is National Sorry Day, a day when we pause to reflect on the grief, trauma, and loss of culture suffered by the Stolen Generation and their families.

“Children removed were denied their language and their culture.”

It is estimated that at least 1 in 10, up to 1 in 3, children were removed from their communities. The National Inquiry into the Separation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Children from their Family found that there is not one Aboriginal community in Australia today that the separation policy has not scarred – if not in this generation, then in former generations.

“This is not ancient history. It is about today’s reality of suffering.”

After hearing and reading over 500 stories, the Commission’s findings were published in the Bringing Them Home report in April 1997. It detailed the laws, policies and practices that allowed children to be taken from their families - and included many case studies that contest the claim made by many non-Indigenous Australians that the removal of children was 'in their own interests'.

To help people understand how the assimilation policy caused not just first-hand, but intergenerational trauma, this powerful documentary was produced:

Please watch and share it this National Sorry Day.
