June is LGBTQIA+ Pride Month! 🌈

Pride started as a series of riots at the Stonewall Inn in New York, beginning June 28th 1969 in reaction to police raids for the purpose of arresting gay patrons. These riots were instrumental in the fight for q***r civil rights and were largely led by trans women of colour.

Today, Pride is celebrated during June to honour these contributions and commemorate the progress that has been made in q***r civil rights.

However, it is also a time to note that not everywhere has decriminalised q***r identities. This means a lot of places in the world are still not safe spaces for LGBTQIA+ folk. For these reasons, Pride is also a time to acknowledge that more needs to be done to advocate for the equality and safety of LGBTQIA+ people.

[Image Description: The first slide depicts the Progress Pride flag made up of coloured dots on a pale pink background with the words “Pride Month, June 2026.” The second slide is a pale pink background with the same dot-flag at the base of the image and contains the following text “Origins: Pride month is celebrated in June to commemorate the 1969 Stonewall Inn Riots. The riots marked the beginning of the Western gay liberation movement in the context of homosexuality being criminalised. Today, Pride is a celebration of LGBTQIA+ culture, identity, and history, aimed at fostering inclusivity and advocating for equality.” The third slide keeps the same visual scheme and contains the following text: “LGBTQIA+ Pride is all about creating a supportive environment and inclusive community for anyone who identifies as part of the broader q***r community and its allies. Pride is a time to celebrate different identities, how far we have come from criminalising q***r identities and acknowledging the work that still needs to be done.”]

This week is National Reconciliation Week.

It is a time to acknowledge Australians’ shared history, to honour truths and continue our work towards reconciliation.

So much of the improvements made to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander People’s rights and wellbeing has been fronted by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander People themselves.

Whilst it is so important to celebrate the resilience and self-efficacy of First Nations Australians, it is also important that this important work does not always rest on their shoulders alone.

That is why this year’s theme is ALL IN, as a reminder that we ALL need to be fully committed to Australia’s reconciliation.

[Image Description: The first slide shows the 2026 National Reconciliation Week ALL IN theme logo on a yellow background with green, pink and blue decorative dots. The second page contains the following text: “All In is a call for all Australians to commit wholeheartedly to reconciliation every single day. So much of the work done towards improving Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander People’s rights has fallen to Indigenous Australians. But this work needs to be done by ALL Australians, every day”.]

On the 26th of May each year, National Sorry Day commemorates the anniversary of the tabling of the Bringing Them Home report in the Australian Parliament in 1997 and honours the survivors from the Stolen Generations.

It is important to continue to recognise the atrocities committed under Government policies and to acknowledge the lasting impact on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities and people today.

[Image Description: The first slide features dark red text on an orange background that reads "National Sorry Day: May 26th" in the lower part of the image. The top of the image has a pattern of white dots. The second slide features the same colour scheme that reads "National Sorry Day commemorates the tabling of the “Bringing Them Home” report. It is a day to recognise the profound harms done to Aboriginal people through the forced removal of children by racist Government policies. These harms continue to be felt across generations by the disconnection of people from culture, land, family and kinship.” The third slide titled “Celebrating Resilience” and reads: “It is equally important to acknowledge the immense resilience and strength of the people affected by these horrific policies. Celebrate the work done towards healing communities that have experienced significant trauma.” The fourth and fifth slide titled “Support” and lists support services for first nations folks including 13YARN, Yorgum Healing Services, Thirrili and Moorditji Yarning.]
