Every girl deserves the freedom to imagine her future, and the opportunity to shape it.

This International Day of the Girl, we celebrate the courage, potential and leadership of girls everywhere, and stand behind the UN’s call to end child marriage and invest in girls’ rights.

At Adara, we work alongside communities to protect girls from trafficking, early marriage and other forms of harm. By improving the quality of education and helping children, especially girls, stay in school, we’re building safe and inclusive communities where they can thrive.

We know progress is possible. An estimated 68 million child marriages have been averted over the past 25 years through investments in girls’ education, legal reform and social protection.

Now, we must build on this progress. Together, we can end child marriage and build a world where every girl is free to learn, grow and make her own choices.

Yesterday’s destructive flooding in Gorkha, Nepal, underscores the ongoing risks and challenges faced by so many across the country.

Coming just weeks after the catastrophic glacier collapse and flooding along the Rasuwa-Trishuli river system, this latest emergency places further pressure on communities already facing immense loss and uncertainty.

As the International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD) has warned, this highlights the danger posed by cascading mountain hazards, where one event can trigger another and amplify the impacts on people, infrastructure and essential services.

Adara will ensure our expertise and resources are directed where it can have the greatest impact.

As communities across Nepal confront repeated compounding and climate-related disasters, immediate relief must be matched by long-term commitment.

Investment in disaster preparedness, early-warning systems, resilient infrastructure and locally-led recovery is essential to protecting lives and reducing the impacts of future hazards.

Our hearts go out to everyone affected. The global Adara team will stand alongside affected communities in the short, medium and long term.

This World Teachers’ Day, we’re celebrating incredible teachers like Chameli, who returned to the community where she grew up to give back to the next generation.

A teacher at Adara-supported Indrayani Basic School in Ghyangfedi, Chameli is helping children learn, grow and thrive. Wanting to make learning more engaging and interactive for her students, she took part in Adara-supported teacher training.

There, she gained practical skills to encourage classroom participation and create a more child-friendly learning environment. Chameli’s approach has strengthened students’ confidence, supported improved attendance and learning outcomes, and built closer connections between the school and local families.

For her, the greatest reward is seeing children happy to come to school.

“My greatest motivation is the smiles of students,” she says.

Five weeks after catastrophic floods swept through Nepal, the challenges are far from over. This week, severe rains, landslides, road closures and infrastructure damage have affected parts of Humla, Nuwakot and Ghyangfedi, placing further pressure on communities already recovering from the floods.

Amid these ongoing challenges, our team continues to work tirelessly alongside schools and communities, supporting them as they recover and rebuild. Our focus remains on prioritising children’s health, safety, wellbeing and learning continuity.

Meet Joseph, Adara’s Biomedical Engineer in Uganda keeping life-saving equipment running 💙
Joining the team in May, Joseph works behind the scenes, strengthening the capacity of hospital biomedical and maintenance teams to install, maintain and safely use critical neonatal and maternal health equipment across AdaraNewborn facilities.

This matters because supplying medical equipment only improve outcomes over the long term if local teams have the skills and systems to maintain it, repair it and use it safely.

By strengthening biomedical engineering capacity at our partner hospitals, Joseph is helping keep vital equipment working, while supporting stronger, more sustainable health systems across Uganda.

For 29-year-old Manisha, access to skilled maternal care proved lifesaving.

In the remote village of Dharapori in Humla, Nepal, maternal health services were previously very difficult to access. After delivering her first baby prematurely at home and nearly losing her life, Manisha worried about what might happen during her second pregnancy.

Thankfully, this time she received regular support from a Female Community Health Volunteer and attended all eight recommended antenatal care visits at the Adara-supported Chauganfaya Birthing Centre.

When complications arose during and after the premature birth of her baby boy, Sonam, skilled health workers provided the urgent care they both needed.

Today, Manisha and Sonam are healthy and thriving. Their story highlights the lifesaving importance of quality maternal and newborn healthcare in remote communities.

Essential newborn care saves lives. But in Uganda, a shortage of neonatal expertise means too many newborns still lack access to the specialised care they need.

That’s why we’re working alongside health workers and health facilities to strengthen newborn care and help build a national network of neonatal specialists through AdaraNewborn.
Following the launch of our partnership with Kayunga Regional Referral Hospital, our clinical team has delivered Essential Newborn Care training for health workers from the hospital and three surrounding lower-level health facilities.

Participants strengthened their skills in caring for babies immediately after birth and throughout the newborn period, using simple, proven practices that can save lives. The training also turned learning into action. Each facility identified key gaps in its newborn care and developed an action plan to address them.

This is part of our wider work to strengthen care across the Kayunga region by building the skills of health workers and connecting facilities across the local referral network. Because every newborn deserves the best possible start in life.

Three weeks after devastating floods struck Nepal, our team continues to work tirelessly alongside affected communities, responding to urgent needs while planning for longer-term support.

Thanks to the extraordinary generosity of the Adara community, our Nepal Flood Emergency Appeal has now raised more than $1 million AUD, making this critical work possible.

Our immediate response is focused on access to safe water and hygiene, as well as child protection.
At the same time, we are undertaking a thorough needs assessment and consulting with communities to ensure our support is directed where it can add the greatest value in the months and years ahead.
