Families across Nepal have lost loved ones, homes and access to essential services after catastrophic flash floods swept through parts of the country. Communities now face urgent shortages of food, safe water, shelter and medical care.

We are seeking $500,000 to support communities in need. Thanks to the incredible generosity of our supporter The Shine On Foundation, every dollar you give up to $70,000 will be matched – doubling support for communities in need.

As many of you will be aware, yesterday morning an avalanche of ice and rock triggered massive flash floods that swept through parts of Nepal and China. The destruction has been extensive, with homes swept away, roads and bridges damaged, and critical infrastructure disrupted. Tragically, there has been a significant loss of life and severe damage across a number of districts.

The Adara family is shocked by this devastating flood event and are stepping forward to be of support to the communities we work with and the Nepali people. All Adara staff are safe. While Nuwakot District, where Adara's work in Ghyangfedi is based, has been affected by the wider disaster, our project sites have not been directly impacted at this stage.

Our hearts are with the families and loved ones of those who have lost their lives, and our thoughts are with all those affected by this disaster.

The situation is still unfolding. In consultation with local authorities and community leaders, the Adara-supported Shree Ghyangfedi School has been temporarily closed while the situation becomes clearer. The school is located close to the river, and the safety of students, staff and families remains our highest priority.

We are currently in full risk assessment mode as the crisis continues to evolve, and we are in the early stages of emergency response. Adara’s Risk Committee has been activated and has begun assessing the potential impacts on our people, programmes and operations, along with the measures needed to manage any emerging risks.

We will be working with the Social Welfare Council, the Nepali Government and other relevant agencies to ensure Adara manages a coordinated emergency response in the days and weeks ahead.

Adara has been working in Nepal for 28 years. Our teams have deep experience during emergencies and periods of crisis. Many team members played a key role in Adara's response to the 2015 earthquakes and have lived and worked through numerous crises over the years. We are well placed to respond thoughtfully, safely, and in partnership with local leaders as the situation unfolds.

Thank you to everyone who has reached out offering support and with messages of concern. We will continue to provide updates, and we will let our supporters know what help we may need as we map our emergency response.

In times of crisis, people rise and they are magnificent. We are already seeing that as the Nepali and global community steps forward in support of their neighbours.

Clean hands, clean water and plenty of smiling faces! 💧🫧

Students in Ghyangfedi are loving their new child-friendly handwashing stations and water filters.

The colourful new facilities are making handwashing and clean drinking water easier, more accessible, and more fun throughout the school day. Together with hygiene education, they are helping children put what they learn into practice and build healthy everyday habits.

And as these photos show, the new stations are already a big hit! 💙

Welcome to the brand new neonatal care unit at Nakasongola Health Centre IV 😍

This new space will allow more babies to access specialised care closer to home, reducing referrals and improving outcomes for vulnerable newborns and their families across Nakasongola District.

Built through the generous support of William Whyte and Oor Bairns Charitable Trust, the unit was established in partnership with Nakasongola Health Centre IV and Uganda’s Ministry of Health.

Adara supported the fit-out, equipping the unit with 107 essential neonatal care items, including
incubators, radiant warmers, phototherapy machines, monitoring devices and oxygen support equipment. Six scanners were also generously gifted by Consultant Midwife Sonographer Jocelyn Reid from Raigmore Hospital in Scotland.

Alongside this equipment, we are supporting clinical training and mentorship, strengthening leadership and governance, and helping to implement quality improvement systems that support safe, high-quality newborn care.

As our fifth core AdaraNewborn site, Nakasongola is part of our wider work to halve maternal and newborn deaths and stillbirths across North-Central Uganda.

Grade 10 student Kiran has made history in remote Humla, Nepal 💛

He’s become the highest-scoring student in the history of Shree Karnali Secondary School, achieving a GPA of 3.70, an A+, in Nepal’s national Secondary Education Examinations.

This outstanding result was built on years of hard work, determination and a deep love of learning. But like many children growing up in remote communities, accessing quality education was not always easy.

Since Grade 3, Kiran’s school has been supported through Adara’s education programmes, helping students access the support, resources and opportunities they need to learn and thrive.

Kiran’s record-breaking achievement shows what is possible when young people in remote communities have access to quality education and the support they need to reach their full potential.

Every day, neonatal nurses help give vulnerable newborns the best possible start to life.

They check tiny vital signs, keep babies warm, support feeding, and walk alongside families through moments of uncertainty, fear and hope, while staying alert to the smallest signs of change.

This International Neonatal Nurses Day, we’re celebrating their lifesaving work.

Breastfeeding gives babies a powerful start in life 💙

Across Humla and Ghyangfedi last week, mothers, babies, families and health workers came together to celebrate World Breastfeeding Week at Adara-supported health facilities.

The celebrations were full of colour, community and practical learning. Health workers shared information about exclusive breastfeeding and continued breastfeeding alongside safe and nutritious complementary feeding, helping families understand how to support babies in their earliest months and beyond.

Breastfeeding provides babies with vital nutrition, protection and comfort. It supports healthy growth, strengthens the bond between mother and baby, and offers an important first line of defence against illness.

Moments like these show what strong community health support can look like: trusted care, practical information, mothers and babies celebrated, and communities united around a healthier start for every child.

When students feel involved in their learning, they're more engaged, more confident and more invested in their education.

Across Adara-supported schools in Ghyangfedi and Humla, students are having a say in their learning experience through new student monitoring logbooks.

Student leaders from Grades 5-10 act as a voice for their peers, recording feedback and observations about lessons to share with head teachers.

By creating space for student voice and participation, the logbooks help students actively shape their learning experience while building confidence and leadership skills. They also provide schools with valuable insights that can help strengthen teaching and learning.

This little one's journey is just beginning ❤️

Every newborn deserves the best possible start in life.

The care a baby receives in their first days and weeks can make all the difference, especially for sick and small newborns who need specialised support.

Through AdaraNewborn, we're strengthening maternal, newborn and child health services across Uganda to improve survival rates for newborns and their mothers.

Together with local health facilities, health workers and communities, we're working to halve preventable maternal and newborn deaths and stillbirths through stronger health systems, giving more mothers and babies the opportunity to survive, thrive.

Safety is the foundation for every child's future. Children cannot learn, grow or reach their potential if they are not safe.

Today is World Day Against Trafficking in Persons. At Adara, ensuring that the children we work with are safe and protected from harm is our priority.

In the communities we work, children — particularly girls — face heightened risks of trafficking, early marriage and other forms of harm.

By strengthening child protection systems in schools, communities and local government, we're helping create environments where children feel safe, stay in education and peruse their aspirations and reach their potential.
