Mental Health Carers NSW

Mental Health Carers NSW As a peak body, MHCN works with and for mental health carers in NSW. Mental Health Carers NSW (‘MHCN’, formerly ARAFMI NSW) is a non-government organisation.

We represent the voices and lived experience of carers which help us to advocate systemically for mental health reform. We are the peak body for mental health carers in NSW. As a peak, we engage in systemic advocacy to reflect the voices and needs of carers and drive change in the mental health system. We primarily achieve this through our policy work. Additionally, MHCN also engages in capacity d

evelopment activities such as upskilling mental health carers and relevant others through training. We also facilitate events, produce informational resources, and engage with carers through our Mental Health Carer Advocacy Network project.

🎉 Last month in May, we celebrated the 1-year anniversary of Maddy starting at MHCN.

📣Originally, Maddy joined MHCN as a Board Member a number of years ago. Now that she is back at MHCN but in a different capacity as a staff member, Maddy has been involved in reviewing the content from MHCN's Training and Education Program, as well as being pivotal in the planning of the roll out of new training platform, Articulate.

Currently, Maddy is working on how we can better utilise the data from MHCN's membership platform, the Mental Health Carer Advocacy Network, as well as researching and implementing a new membership platform to better support the needs of MHCN as we continue to grow.

💭 Reflecting on her time so far at MHCN, Maddy said:

"Mental Health Carers NSW has been an organisation close to my heart for a long time and it’s been so rewarding over the past year to observe the tremendous amount of work that happens here. The team has been so welcoming, and I am enjoying being able to help make mental health carers more resourced and more visible through my role. There’s always more to do and more change to work towards but I’m excited by what’s to come."

👏 We are thrilled to have Maddy back as part of the team. Thank you to Maddy for your enthusiasm, positive attitude, and experience!

World Refugee Day (June 20 2026) comes at a time when the promise of safety is being tested in every region of the world.

75 years ago, the world made a promise: people forced to flee have the right to seek safety. It was never meant for a few. It was meant for all of us.

That right was made for times like these. With tens of millions of people forced to flee around the world, that promise has never been more needed.

This World Refugee Day, help keep the promise of safety alive. Stand with refugees. Until everyone is safe, the work is not done.

📣 Mental Health Carers NSW welcomes additional funding for mental health peak bodies, with Mental Health Carers NSW, BEING - Mental Health Consumers Ltd, and the Mental Health Coordinating Council each receiving an extra $333,000 per annum over four years.

The investment will strengthen sector advocacy and leadership, recognising the vital role peak bodies play in bringing lived experience into mental health policy and reform.

MHCN CEO, Jonathan Harms, said the timing is critical, with the National Mental Health and Su***de Prevention Agreement under renegotiation, major NDIS changes underway, and foundational supports still needed for the 233,500 people with severe psychosocial disability identified by the Productivity Commission as having no formal support.

Mental Health Carers NSW thanks Minister Rose Jackson on behalf of the NSW state government, (the Minister for Health Ryan Park, and Premier Minns), for the commitment to strengthening the mental health system in NSW and recognising the contribution of peak bodies to supporting the voice of lived experience in that process.

A new national campaign launched for Men's Health Week is encouraging Australian men to stop putting their health on hold and book a check-up with their GP.

Designed to normalise early help-seeking, the campaign encourages men aged 18 to 44 to act when something changes in their health rather than waiting until issues become serious.

At the centre of the campaign is a dedicated online hub featuring interactive content, real stories, practical health information and support services, all aimed at helping men recognise when it is time to see a GP.

On Wednesday 27 May, MHCN CEO Jonathan Harms was a panellist for the Carer Knowledge Exchange Online Symposium 2026: Recognising, Respecting, Reimagining: 50 years of learning from carers and shaping what comes next.

The Symposium provided the opportunity for many people and organisations from across the sector to come together to reflect on 50 years of learning from carers, share knowledge and experiences, and explore current and future directions for research, policy and practice.

The event created valuable opportunities to connect across sectors, learn from each other, and continue important conversations about improving outcomes for carers and the people they support.

Thank you to Carers NSW for hosting such a reflective and informative 3 day event. The recordings will be available via the CKE website shortly: https://buff.ly/CmOvd8c
