Congratulations to Kyara, our latest Learner to gain their Ps through the Darebin L2P program. We hope you enjoy your newfound driving freedom.

Thank you to their mentor Robert who helped Lyara get the driving experience needed to access education, employment and community.

Mentors always share what an amazingly rewarding experience it is to help a young person in this way. With some initial training and just two hours a week, you can make a big difference. If you would like to be part of the program please reach out to us!

Today we all wear purple to recognise and stand in solidarity with the LGBTQIA+SB communty.

Colours of Courage recognises the bravery it takes to push for change in schools, workplaces, communities and institutions where conversations about LGBTQIA+SB lives do not always happen. It celebrates the allies who choose to stand up, speak out and ask what they can do to help create safer, more inclusive spaces.

It also honours the courage of generations of LGBTQIA+SB people who came before us, and the strength of young people today as they continue to build community, connection and visibility.

Wear purple today with pride!

Because courage is not only found in the big moments. It is found in the everyday choices to live proudly, support others and invite people into understanding, acceptance and celebration.

What a night! Earlier this month, volunteers from the Darebin Fruit Squad and friends of DIVRS brought people together for a Scottish-style bush dance to raise funds for the Fruit Squad.

There was a lot of laughter and smiles as we learnt the moves and steps to dances, with music from Melbourne accordion player Dave Evans, delicious scones baked and donated by Alphington CWA and donated beautiful prizes for the raffle. It was such a fun, welcoming event.

A very special heartfelt thank you to Rachel, Roslyn, Mike and David for all the work that went into bringing the night together, and to for giving us such a great place to dance the night away. And thank you to everyone who came along, danced and contributed.

Together, we raised more than $2,300 to support the Fruit Squad.

For 14 years Fruit Squad volunteers have been knocking on doors across Darebin collecting leftover fruit from backyard trees that would otherwise go to waste. So far that’s more than 25 tonnes of fresh fruit rescued and shared with the community.

It’s never only been about the fruit. It’s also about connecting over the back fence, sharing stories about the trees and neighbours supporting each other across our community.

Today, 130 households open their gates to us. The fruit is combined with nutritious produce grown in DIVRS’s urban farms and shared with 500 people across Darebin every week. It’s a beautiful example of what can happen when a community chooses to make sure people don’t have to face challenges alone.

Many thanks to Kat Theophanous MP who last month dropped off much needed food supplies donated by community to her office.

Every week we share food with 500 Darebin locals experiencing financial stress and food insecurity.

We share nutritious healthy fresh food, pantry essentials and ready to eat meals, helping to ease expenses and contributing to good health.

With the rising cost of living, we’re always looking for more food to share.

You can get involved by running a food drive at your work, school or community group. Find out more at www.divrs.org.au/be-involved

National Student Volunteer Week has changed its name to National Youth Volunteer week recognising young people volunteer in all sorts of ways.

This years theme is Your Year to Lead, acknowledging and encouraging leadership opportunities. Age should not be a barrier to taking the lead, mentoring, chairing groups or helping create safe and encouraging work spaces.

DIVRS has student placements in social work, nursing and community services. We have young people in our gardens and food sharing operations. They bring a unique perspective, new ideas and great energy to their work spaces and our community.

Through their volunteering experiences, young people build connection, confidence, a sense of purpose, develop leadership and empathy, strengthen community ties and grow into leaders for the future.

Thank you for all you do with our community here in Darebin.
