Great to see such strong local interest in the mangrove and saltmarsh coastal wetlands of the Barwon Estuary during the recent ‘Meander along the Mangroves’ event as part of the Barwon Heads Arts Council Inc. Mangroves from the Water exhibition supported by Corangamite Catchment Management Authority

The Barwon Estuary’s coastal wetlands are iconic local ecosystems that protect shorelines from erosion, filter pollution from the waterway, support fish and bird life, store blue carbon and help buffer the impacts of climate change and sea level rise. The huge turnout showed just how much these wetlands matter to the community.

But these systems are under increasing pressure from stormwater pollution, altered freshwater flows, uncontrolled access, boat wash and rising seas. Long-term protection will depend on strong local stewardship and people getting involved in caring for these places.

One of the most encouraging things from the event was seeing the passion, knowledge and enthusiasm already present within the community. That kind of grassroots stewardship is exactly what’s needed to support resilient coastal ecosystems and real conservation outcomes.

We’re now looking for opportunities to kick start the MangroveWatch citizen science program in the Barwon Estuary to help turn that local passion into long-term monitoring and community-led conservation action. Communities protecting the places they love is where real change starts.

Join us for a night of Wine, S***m & Mangroves🍷🕺🌳

At Geelong Pint of Science 😉

Jock Mackenzie will be presenting funky mangrove facts and how citizen science is turning into community-led conservation action through MangroveWatch and Earthwatch Australia.

Alongside talks on winemaking and reproductive health, it’ll be a fun and informative evening of science with a very eclectic (and not entirely unrelated) mix of topics.

📍 The Barwon Club, Geelong
📅 Wednesday 20 May
🕕 6–9 pm

🌿 It’s World Wetlands Day, and we’re excited to share the launch of the Saltmarsh SAVERs data platform with our partners Earthwatch Australia.

🌿 Explore the Saltmarsh Monitoring Dashboard: https://buff.ly/NKJ1vCf

🧭 Built from 500+ community-led surveys across Cairns, Townsville, Mackay and Agnes Water, the platform highlights how people value tropical saltmarsh, the pressures these wetlands face, and where on-ground investment can make the biggest difference.

📊 A great example of citizen science supporting smarter conservation and management decisions.

🙏 Thank you to all the citizen scientists who contributed data — protecting tropical saltmarsh is a shared community effort built on strong local stewardship.

💬 Feedback on the dashboard is welcome. If you’d like to see your local sites included, get in touch!

You can contribute to protecting saltmarsh habitats by recording saltmarsh biodiversity through iNaturalist.org
Check out our saltmarsh projects to see what plants and animals live in your local saltmarsh:

🌿 Townsville Great Southern BioBlitz 2025 – Coastal Wetland Critter Quest Wrap-Up 🦀

The Townsville Great Southern BioBlitz is nearly at a close, and what an incredible few days it’s been!

We kicked things off on Friday on Palm Island with the Bwgcolman Community School, then continued the adventure on Saturday with two community BioBlitz events in Railway Estate and Pallarenda. On Sunday, Canoe Projects hosted a bird count and BioBlitz on Yunbenun, rounding out a fantastic weekend of coastal exploration.

On Saturday, 20 enthusiastic citizen scientists from a wide range of interest groups joined us to explore the mangroves and saltmarshes — recording plants, crabs, molluscs, mudskippers, insects, spiders and much more.

It’s been inspiring to see so many Townsville locals passionate about protecting and celebrating their coastal biodiversity 💚

📝 Early results are impressive:
📊 444 observations of 226 species
👥 47 observers supported by 115 identifiers
🦀 7th Australian record of mangrove climbing crab (Selatium elongatum) (in moult)— and the first for the Palm Island Group
🍄 First bioregional record of white-footed slime mould (Diachea leucopodia)
🐭 A potential sighting of the EPBC-listed water mouse (Xeromys myoides) and nest (to be confirmed) — which would be the first record between Airlie Beach and Cairns ✨

A huge thank you to everyone who took part, shared their knowledge, and got their boots muddy to help document Townsville’s coastal life. The full results will keep coming in over the next few days as identifications are confirmed.

📸 Keep recording sightings until midnight tonight to be included in the BioBlitz. You then have 7 days to upload them to iNaturalist — every observation counts!

🤝 The Townsville Great Southern BioBlitz was hosted by Earthwatch Australia as part of the Climate Resilience Champions Program, supported by the Australian Government , Great Barrier Reef Foundation, and the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water.
