An important step towards stronger protections against discrimination in Western Australia.

Circle Green has been advocating for reform of WA's outdated Equal Opportunity Act through our 𝗘𝗾𝘂𝗮𝗹 𝗝𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗪𝗔 campaign, alongside a coalition of community organisations and legal advocates.

We welcome the introduction of legislation to modernise these laws and strengthen protections for Western Australians, in the form of the 𝘌𝘲𝘶𝘢𝘭 𝘖𝘱𝘱𝘰𝘳𝘵𝘶𝘯𝘪𝘵𝘺 𝘉𝘪𝘭𝘭 2026.

We are pleased that many of the key asks from the campaign have been included in the Bill. We look forward to examining the full detail of the proposed reforms as the Bill is published, and continuing to advocate for a stronger, fairer Equal Opportunity Act.

New laws to protect more Western Australians from discrimination

I was proud to join the Premier Roger Cook today to announce we have introduced new legislation to modernise the Equal Opportunity Act, ensuring more Western Australians are better protected from discrimination, harassment, and vilification.

No matter who you are, where you come from, or what you believe - everyone deserves to feel safe in the place they call home.

That’s why we’re modernising laws to strengthen protections against discrimination for people from all walks of life - helping us build safe and inclusive communities.

Community legal centres play a vital role in supporting people in regional and remote communities.

We support Community Legal Centres Australia’s advocacy to address the workforce crisis and ensure these services have the resources and staff needed to support their communities.

People living in regional and remote communities deserve community legal centres that are properly staffed to provide the support they need, but the regional and remote community legal workforce crisis is causing too many people to miss out.

Wages in our highly feminised sector fall far behind those of workers in the public and private legal sectors. In regional and remote communities, this disparity combines with the housing and cost-of-living crises to make it impossible for many workers to stay in jobs and communities they truly love.

A positive step forward for access to justice in Western Australia.

Circle Green Community Legal welcomes the WA Government’s announcement of an additional $2 million in funding for community legal services.

Congratulations to Community Legal WA, Chelsea McKinney and the team for their tireless advocacy and leadership in achieving this important outcome.

“When demand for legal assistance continues to grow and budgets are increasingly stretched, positive steps like these mean a great deal.

This investment is welcome recognition of the essential work community legal centres do every day to support Western Australians experiencing disadvantage.

While there is more to be done, this is an encouraging step in the right direction. We look forward to CLWA’s upcoming State Budget Submission and the opportunity to build on this momentum towards sustainable, long-term investment in access to justice.”

Community Legal WA has welcomed a $2 million funding boost for Western Australia’s community legal services, following sustained advocacy to ease financial pressures across the sector, including for practising certificate fee relief.

The investment will provide much-needed flexibility for services, while CLWA continues to advocate for the long-term funding needed to meet growing legal need across WA.

Our upcoming State Budget Submission will call for an additional $22.4 million per annum investment in community legal services.

🏠 The rental bond release process has changed in WA.

Tenants and landlords now have a new process for releasing rental bonds.

If there is a disagreement about how the bond should be released, in most cases the Commissioner for Consumer Protection can make a determination, rather than the parties having to apply to the Magistrates Court.

You can ask your landlord for permission to keep a pet at your rental property.

There are rules about how landlords must respond to pet requests, including when they can refuse a request or place conditions on keeping a pet.

A very important report released by Kimberley Community Legal Services Inc. which examines public housing maintenance across the Kimberley.

Based on the experiences of 166 public housing tenants across 22 communities and towns, the report highlights widespread concerns with the current maintenance system.
