Over three hundred banners are flying across Western Australia during National Reconciliation Week, featuring artwork by emerging Aboriginal artist Melissa Sunfly, a proud Kukatja/Ngardi woman.

Melissaโ€™s artwork, ๐˜”๐˜ถ๐˜ณ๐˜ณ๐˜ถ๐˜ฏ๐˜ฑ๐˜ข, shares a story passed down from her late grandfather, renowned Balgo artist Sunfly Tjampitjin. Through symbols representing law grounds and sandhills, the piece reflects deep cultural knowledge, connection to Country, and the continuation of stories across generations.

The banners are a visual show of support, demonstrating our shared commitment to building strong, respectful relationships with First Australians.

Circle Green is proud to support this Reconciliation WA initiative. You can spot our banner on St Georges Tce (between Irwin St and Victoria Ave) in Boorloo (Perth)! ๐Ÿ“

Yesterday on National Sorry Day, members of Circle Green and our Hay Street Hub community came together for a screening of ๐˜Ž๐˜ฆ๐˜ฏ๐˜ฐ๐˜ค๐˜ช๐˜ฅ๐˜ฆ ๐˜ช๐˜ฏ ๐˜ต๐˜ฉ๐˜ฆ ๐˜ž๐˜ช๐˜ญ๐˜ฅ๐˜ง๐˜ญ๐˜ฐ๐˜ธ๐˜ฆ๐˜ณ ๐˜š๐˜ต๐˜ข๐˜ต๐˜ฆ, as part of our ongoing commitment to reconciliation, learning, and truth-telling.

The film explores the forced removal of Aboriginal children in Western Australia and the lasting impacts of past government policies on Aboriginal communities.

National Sorry Day is an important opportunity to reflect, listen to lived experiences, and continue learning about Australiaโ€™s history and its ongoing impacts today.

A member of our Reconciliation Working Group also shared a thoughtful reflection on the film and the importance of engaging with these stories as part of meaningful reconciliation.

National Sorry Day is observed each year on 26 May, marking the anniversary of the tabling of the ๐˜‰๐˜ณ๐˜ช๐˜ฏ๐˜จ๐˜ช๐˜ฏ๐˜จ ๐˜›๐˜ฉ๐˜ฆ๐˜ฎ ๐˜๐˜ฐ๐˜ฎ๐˜ฆ report in 1997. The report documented the forced removal of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children from their families and communities, now known as the Stolen Generations.

The National Sorry Day flower, the Native Hibiscus (also known as the Desert Rose or Native Cotton), was chosen as a symbol of survival, resilience, and remembrance.

As an organisation committed to justice, National Sorry Day is an opportunity to reflect on the ongoing impacts of these policies, listen to truth-telling, and consider how we can contribute to a more just and equitable future for First Nations peoples.

Recently, members of the Circle Green team travelled to Busselton, Bunbury, and Margaret River to connect with local service providers, deliver service overviews, and share information about the support available through Circle Green.

As part of the trip, the team also delivered workplace rights presentations to Adult Migrant English Program (AMEP) classes in Busselton and Margaret River.

Opportunities like these are an important way for us to strengthen community connections, build awareness of legal rights and services, and improve access to support across regional WA.

Circle Green recently took part in the Perth Law Careers Fair, hosted by The Blackstone Society - UWA Law Students' Society, connecting with students exploring a wide range of careers in the legal sector.

It was fantastic to speak with attendees about the career pathways at Circle Green, with strong interest in our work and available roles. ๐Ÿ’š

The event also provided a great opportunity to connect with representatives from across the legal profession, including commercial firms, government organisations, and fellow not-for-profits.

Thank you to everyone who stopped by to chat with our team! ๐Ÿค
