Rotary Club of West Perth

Rotary Club of West Perth We meet at 07:00 AM for a 07:30 AM start every Thursday upstairs at CU29 Restaurant & Bar, 1275 Hay Street (cnr Outram), West Perth.

West Perth Rotary was chartered (founded) in 1954. Rotary is the oldest and largest service organisation in the world. Through a network of service clubs we strive towards high ethical standards from our members, humanitarian service for our communities and peace in our world. We are men and women from all walks of life who meet regularly to service our communities locally and to create positive,

lasting change globally. There are approximately 1.4 million Rotarians who belong to more than 32,000 Rotary clubs in more than 200 countries. We are men and women full of goodwill, fun and laughter with the common unifying aim of making the world a peaceful, better place for everyone based on this simple personal appraisal of our behaviour. In the things we think, say or do:

- Is it the truth?
- Is it fair to all concerned?
- Will it build goodwill and better friendships?
- Will it be beneficial to all concerned? Our club is supported by Rotary International and our charitable foundation supports our many worldwide partners and projects, including our flagship project to eradicate polio from mankind. We meet at 07:00AM for a 07:30 AM start every Thursday at Kailis Bros Leederville.

Let us clear something up right away. There are no secret passwords, exclusive rituals, or formal barriers to get through the door at Rotary.

We are simply a group of local people who love our community and want to make life better for others, both down the street and around the world. Our members come from all backgrounds, professions, and walks of life, united by a simple desire to help.

If you have been curious about what we do, the best way to find out is to drop by. Grab a coffee, meet a few friendly faces, and see how we work. There is zero pressure, no awkward sales pitch, and no obligation to join. You can explore our projects entirely at your own pace.

If you are ready to lend a hand, make great connections, and help build a better community, we would love to meet you.

Reach out to the Rotary Club of West Perth today and save a seat at our next breakfast meeting. ๐Ÿ‘‡

Music has the power to change hearts, minds, and the course of people's lives.

For business leader and executive coach Bryant Wallace, his journey into Rotary began with something deeply personal: a favourite song lyric.

What started with a single line of music grew into a lifelong dedication to service. Today, it is the profound human connections and the opportunity to create meaningful global impact that keep him inspired every day.

Music has a unique way of moving us toward a higher purpose. What lyric keeps you motivated to make a positive difference in your community?

Last week we had the privilege of hearing from guest speaker Rob Storey about his extraordinary journey, the Long Walk Home. Rob walked an astounding 3,444 kilometres from Melbourne to Perth in just 82 days to raise vital funds for Neuromuscular WA.

Through sheer determination and daily battles with severe blisters, Rob has raised $67,266 to support individuals and families living with neuromuscular conditions. The physical toll of the journey was immense, wearing out four pairs of shoes and losing 8 kilograms during training followed by another 18 kilograms on the road.

Behind every great effort is a supportive community. We extend a special thank you to Merkanooka Haulage, a family-owned business based in Mingenew, WA, who generously donated all the fuel for Rob and Louise's motorhome for the entire duration of the walk.

Thank you, Rob, for inspiring our members with your grit, resilience, and unwavering dedication to making a difference.

Mental health breakthroughs and medical discoveries do not happen overnight, and they rarely make the front page when the work first begins. As Yvonne Keane AM, CEO of Australian Rotary Health, so accurately stated: "The room no one watches is where the important work gets done."

At the Rotary Club of West Perth, we understand the vital importance of that unseen, consistent work. When a community finally gains access to life-changing mental health support or a medical breakthrough, it is because dedicated minds were funded years, sometimes decades, earlier.

That is why supporting Australian Rotary Health remains a core priority for our club. We are not simply funding research projects; we are investing directly in the people behind them. By supporting PhD scholarships and early-career grants, we help nurture the next generation of brilliant Australian researchers, scientists, and clinicians. They are the ones who will one day unlock the discoveries and treatments our community will rely on.

True impact requires vision and patience. By backing the researchers working diligently in those quiet rooms today, we are laying the foundation for a healthier, more resilient world tomorrow.

When disaster strikes, the true strength of our global community is put to the test. Following the devastating earthquakes in Venezuela, Rotary members are on the ground, working shoulder-to-shoulder with IsraAID and ShelterBox to deliver vital relief exactly where it is needed most.

This is what humanitarian collaboration looks like in action. Rotary is not just sending aid; we are actively providing shelter, medical support, and hope to families who have lost everything in an instant.

The road to recovery for these communities is incredibly long, but they do not have to walk it alone. You can help Rotary support those affected by catastrophic disasters across the globe by contributing to the Rotary Disaster Response Fund.

Every contribution ensures that when the worst happens, our coordinated response is swift, effective, and deeply impactful. ๐Ÿ‘‡

Last week, the Rotary Club of West Perth had the absolute privilege of hosting Ms Karen Pfister, Ambassador for Gan Jing World, to address a critical topic affecting families everywhere: the hidden dangers of modern social media and the vital need for safer online environments.

In Chinese, "Gan Jing" translates directly to "clean", a fitting name for a platform designed to pioneer a new standard in digital well-being. Unlike mainstream social networks that rely on addictive algorithms to keep users hooked, Gan Jing World is built entirely around non-addictive, family-friendly, and uplifting content.

Protecting the mental health of our young people requires proactive solutions, both offline and online. By eliminating addictive design patterns and filtering out harmful content, clean platforms provide a safe harbour where children, parents, and educators can engage with technology without compromising their safety or peace of mind.

A sincere thank you to Karen for delivering such an eye-opening presentation to our members. It served as a powerful reminder that building a healthier community means advocating for safety and positive values across every space we inhabit, including the digital world.

Men's Sheds play a vital and transformative role in communities across Western Australia and beyond. They are far more than places to restore furniture or fix tools, they are sanctuaries for mental health, companionship, and shared purpose.

Social isolation can have a profound impact, particularly on men navigating retirement, loss, or significant life changes. Men's Sheds offer a safe, welcoming environment where individuals can gather, share skills, work on local community projects, and find a renewed sense of belonging.

It is often said that men rarely talk face-to-face, they talk shoulder-to-shoulder. By bringing people together around practical, hands-on tasks, Men's Sheds break down barriers, combat loneliness, and create comfortable spaces for crucial conversations about health and well-being.

Strong communities rely on spaces where people feel valued and connected. The Men's Shed movement is a powerful reminder that when we create opportunities for shoulder-to-shoulder connection and community service, everyone benefits.

Long before she became a global advocate for girls' education, Malala Yousafzai grew up in Pakistan's Swat Valley, where her father was an active member of a local Rotary club dedicated to serving their community.

In a conversation on Rotary Voices, Malala reflected on the power of collective action, sharing a profound truth: "Every movement in history was built by many hands."

Rotary International and the Malala Fund share an unwavering belief that every girl, everywhere, deserves access to quality education and equal opportunity.

When local dedication connects with a global movement, we create meaningful, lasting change that transforms generations.

The 1989 vote to admit women into Rotary clubs worldwide remains a watershed moment in our history. Following decades of tireless effort from men and women across the globe, the doors were opened, and the response was overwhelming. By 2010, female membership reached 195,000.

Today, the landscape looks entirely different. Globally, women now make up 27% of Rotary members, and in our youth-focused Rotaract clubs, they represent over 46% of the membership. Closer to home, Australian districts are proudly leading the charge, with some local districts boasting up to 40% female membership.

Women are not just participants; they are actively serving their communities in increasing numbers and stepping into crucial leadership positions at every level of the organisation.

A top priority for Rotary is growing and diversifying our membership to ensure we truly reflect the communities we serve. We know that our capacity to increase our impact and expand our reach is vastly larger when more people unite with us. That is why we deeply value diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Rotary celebrates and welcomes the contributions of people of all backgrounds. Regardless of age, ethnicity, race, ability, religion, socioeconomic status, culture, s*x, s*xual orientation, or gender identity, there is a place for you here.

If you want to be part of an inclusive community where your time and energy translate into real-world impact, we would love to hear from you.
