The Hakka Association of Western Australia Inc. (HakkaWA) successfully hosted Hakka Connect 2.0 on Sunday, 12 July 2026, at the Hillview Intercultural Community Centre in Bentley, bringing together community members, cultural organisations, government representatives and friends from across Western Australia to celebrate the rich heritage and enduring spirit of the Hakka people.
Supported by the Western Australian Government's Office of Multicultural Interests (OMI), Hakka Connect 2.0 continued HakkaWA's commitment to preserving Hakka culture, promoting intercultural understanding and strengthening social connections within Western Australia's diverse multicultural community.
The event welcomed more than 200 participants and commenced with a warm welcome from Master of Ceremonies Keith Yong, followed by an engaging programme that celebrated Hakka traditions through cultural performances, educational presentations and community participation.
HakkaWA was honoured to welcome distinguished guests, including Ms Fu Lihua, Consul-General of the People's Republic of China in Perth Consulate General of China in Perth, and Ms Rosemine Mutamuliza from the Office of Multicultural Interests, whose presence underscored the importance of cultural diversity, community engagement and international friendship.
The day's programme showcased the richness and vibrancy of Hakka culture through a variety of performances and presentations. Highlights included a spectacular Lion Dance performance by Chow Kwoon Yarn Yee Tong, an energetic Hakka Qilin (Kilin) Dance, and elegant Hakka cultural dance performances, all of which received enthusiastic applause from the audience.
A major highlight of the event was an insightful presentation by Dr Philip Chien, who shared the history of the Hakka people and the significant contributions the Hakka community has made to the development of Western Australia. His presentation provided attendees with a deeper understanding of Hakka migration, resilience and the community's continuing contribution to the State's multicultural landscape.
Throughout the morning, participants had the opportunity to learn more about Hakka customs, traditions and cultural heritage while engaging with members of the wider community in an inclusive and welcoming environment. The event reflected HakkaWA's vision of connecting people through education, culture and friendship.
Following the formal programme, guests enjoyed a delicious lunch together, providing an opportunity to reconnect with old friends, build new relationships and continue meaningful conversations. The relaxed and friendly atmosphere demonstrated the strength of community spirit that has become the hallmark of the Hakka Connect series.
Speaking after the event, HakkaWA President Suzanne Woo expressed her appreciation to everyone who contributed to the success of Hakka Connect 2.0.
