Bringing the arts to life In 2023, the organisation approved a name change to ArtsNational. ADFAS (Newcastle) became ArtsNational Newcastle.

The Australian Decorative and Fine Arts Society (ADFAS) was established in Sydney in 1985 and was inspired by the National Association of Fine and Decorative Arts (NADFAS) in the UK (now known as The Arts Society). Members of ArtsNational societies enjoy a series of illustrated lectures each year by leading UK and Australian experts. Each lecture aims to promote deeper understanding of art history and explore contemporary art movements. Lectures are followed by light refreshments and an opportunity to network with other members and meet the lecturer. ArtsNational encourages young people to develop their creativity through a a range of grants, awards and scholarships. ArtsNational volunteers document and share the rich history of heritage buildings in the community.

To mark the end of another wonderful ArtsNational Newcastle year, we are embracing the festive season a little early with a screening of the film LEE, followed by a Q&A, Antony Penrose's lecture at the Hunter theatre. To top off the occasion there will be a glass of celebratory bubbly and Christmas cake.

Our 2026 lecture series has been diverse and interesting. This, our last lecture of the year promises to be no different.
Come early for the AGM at 6pm and stay after the lecture for a performance by Tantrum theatre, one of our Young Arts recipients

To complement our October lecture, "Lee Miller and Roland Penrose at Farley Farm", by Lecturer Antony Penrose on Monday 26 October at 6.00pm. our wonderful supporter, Peter Sourris, Proprietor of Tower Cinemas, has generously arranged a special screening of "LEE", starring Kate Winslet as the remarkable photographer Lee Miller.
Following the screening of the film there will be a Q & A with Lee Miller's son Antony Penrose.

Professor Conte-Helm is a long-established Lecturer of The Arts Society with a BA in History of Art and an MA in Asian Art. She has most recently served as Executive Director of the UK-Japan 21st Century Group, as Visiting Professor at Northumbria University

Looking forward to our penultimate lecture for this year presented by Marie Conte-Helm
Professor Conte-Helm is a long-established Lecturer of The Arts Society with a BA in History of Art and an MA in Asian Art. She has most recently served as Executive Director of the UK-Japan 21st Century Group, as Visiting Professor at Northumbria University, and as a Member of the Board of Governors of the University for the Creative Arts. She is also a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts. She was Director General of the Daiwa Anglo-Japanese Foundation from 1999-2011 and has held senior academic positions at various UK universities.

Mary Sharp is our July lecturer.
Mary is an experienced broadcaster and teacher with particular expertise in literature and drama. She worked for many years for BBC Radio 4 producing some of its most popular programmes, including Start the Week and Woman’s Hour, before joining the senior management team as a Commissioning Editor. Mary has subsequently worked as a teacher and Director of Sixth Form at a leading girls’ grammar school. She now runs her own company Opening Up Literature which offers literature courses for adults including studies of Shakespeare and Creative Writing.
