Arts National Newcastle

Arts National Newcastle Bringing the arts to life In 2023, the organisation approved a name change to ArtsNational. ADFAS (Newcastle) became ArtsNational Newcastle.

The Australian Decorative and Fine Arts Society (ADFAS) was established in Sydney in 1985 and was inspired by the National Association of Fine and Decorative Arts (NADFAS) in the UK (now known as The Arts Society). Members of ArtsNational societies enjoy a series of illustrated lectures each year by leading UK and Australian experts. Each lecture aims to promote deeper understanding of art histor

y and explore contemporary art movements. Lectures are followed by light refreshments and an opportunity to network with other members and meet the lecturer. ArtsNational encourages young people to develop their creativity through a a range of grants, awards and scholarships. ArtsNational volunteers document and share the rich history of heritage buildings in the community.

Our May 18 evening lecture is entitled :
The Artist and his Model: Whistler and Joanna Heffernan.

Whistler’s painting, Symphony in White, No. 1: The White Girl (1862) is both monumental and modern. Though its scale recalls grand portraits, Whistler’s innovative technique and overall treatment of the subject resist straightforward interpretation. In this presentation we will examine Joanna Hiffernan’s role in his art and life. Was she simply his model and lover? Or could she have been an essential collaborator who influenced his artistic vision, assisting him in his development of a new pictorial language?
