One of Newcastle‘s greatest surfers Nicky Wood is one of the most famous prodigies in Australian surfing history, celebrated for his immense talent, his legendary status as the youngest male to win a World Championship Tour (WCT) event. Born in 1970 and raised in Merewether, NSW, Wood was a child prodigy. He had deep surfing pedigree—he was the godson of four-time world champion Mark Richards, who also shaped his boards. By his mid-teens, he was practically unbeatable in the junior and cadet ranks. In 1987, at just 16 years old, Wood shocked the professional surfing world. Competing as a wildcard in his very first major pro event at the Rip Curl Pro at Bells Beach, he took down legendary surfers like Tom Curren, Barton Lynch, and Shaun Tomson to win the whole thing. Expectations were incredibly high, but his career was quickly derailed by severe physical and personal struggles. As he went through a rapid and extreme teenage growth spurt, the stress on his knees caused chronic and debilitating joint pain. He struggled to maintain the physical conditioning required to stay on tour.Due to the intense pressure, his physical decline, and the heartbreak of not meeting the massive expectations placed on a 16-year-old, Wood began stepping away from the spotlight. Surfing journalists of the era affectionately—and somewhat tragically—dubbed him “The Phantom” for how frequently he would drop off the tour and disappear from the public eye. We salute Nicky and his amazing achievements as one of Newys finest!
