The School of Law and Justice invites Expressions of Interest from students to represent the University of Newcastle in the inaugural National Sports Tribunal Arbitration Moot (NSTAM). We have been selected as one of a small number of Australian universities to participate in this prestigious pilot competition—an excellent opportunity to develop advocacy, research, and sports arbitration expertise.

Students must be available from June to September 2026. Key dates include:
EOI submission deadline: 5:00pm, Wednesday 13 May
Team selection notified: Friday 15 May
Problem released: 18 May
Educational webinars: 22–26 June
Written submissions due: 10 July
Round robin hearings (online): 10–21 August
Final hearing: 15 September (Sydney) [for finalist teams]

A team of 2–4 students will be selected. Preference will be given to students in their final years and those enrolled in LAWS6099. The team will be coached by Professor John Anderson and Dr Ray Nickson.

EOI requirements (max 150 words):
Please outline your interest and motivation for participating, and demonstrate your understanding of arbitration and tribunals—particularly in a sports context. Please also indicate your year of study.

Please email your EOI to Dr Ray Nickson ([email protected]) with the subject line “NSTAM 2026 Expression of Interest”. While not required, inclusion of an unofficial academic transcript will assist in the selection process. Students should also review the attached competition handbook before submitting.

Please note the short turnaround reflects the recent release of the NST call.
