Riding the Rails of History: A Visit to Ferny Grove Men’s Shed and Brisbane Tramway Museum

As part of the Trams and Trains tour at our recent National Gathering, around 50 shedders and their partners visited the Ferny Grove Men’s Shed, which operates in conjunction with the Brisbane Tramway Museum. The visit offered a behind-the-scenes look at a unique working museum where heritage, hands-on skills, and community come together.

On arrival, the group was taken through the facility and given an overview of how the site is organised and managed. Visitors explored the sheds and gained insight into the maintenance routines that keep historic trams operational. A highlight for many was the opportunity to ride on three different trams, experiencing firsthand the charm and character of these restored vehicles as they travelled around the museum grounds.

The Brisbane Tramway Museum operates with a distinctive structure. While it includes a men’s shed component, tramway operations take priority over private or general shed projects. However, with limited tram restoration work currently underway, much of the members’ time is spent on personal projects, alongside occasional community work for local schools, churches, and other organisations.
The site also relies on a broader group of museum volunteers. Members who identify as “shedders” typically focus on maintaining the grounds, buildings, and essential services, while “trammies” are more directly involved in crewing and maintaining the trams themselves. The museum community is spread widely, with members travelling from as far as Townsville and interstate to participate.
In total, the museum has around 95 members, although only 25 to 30 are regular attendees. Unlike many traditional men’s sheds, Ferny Grove does not typically host guest speakers or participate in inter-shed visits, giving it a more operational, hands-on focus centred on preserving and running the tramway itself.

The Ferny Grove Women’s Shed is a separate but related initiative operating from the same museum site. It runs sessions on Wednesdays and Thursdays, with both morning and afternoon groups limited to 12 participants each. Demand for places is strong, with more than 60 women currently on the waiting list, highlighting the growing interest in the program and its supportive community environment.

Together, these initiatives form a unique blend of heritage preservation and community engagement. The Ferny Grove site not only keeps Brisbane’s tram history alive but also provides a meaningful space for connection, learning, and contribution across both men’s and women’s shed communities.

🚗🛠️ From Alice Springs to the Top End

AMSA's Shed Support SA/NT, Tim, recently hit the road to connect with Men's Sheds across the Northern Territory. The journey provided a fantastic opportunity to visit sheds throughout the NT, spending quality time with shedders and local communities.

Along the way Tim, and AMSA's new recruit Mark, met with shedders to discuss new opportunities to strengthen shed resilience, support member wellbeing, and explore strategies for establishing new sheds in communities where interest is growing.

Wherever they travelled, NT sheds showed incredible hospitality, proudly sharing their projects, craftsmanship and community contributions. A particular highlight was their visit to the Wadeye Men's Shed, where members from Palmerston Mens Shed and Darwin Men's Shed joined together to build positive relationships and strengthen connections with fellow shedders.

A big thank you to Joe and the members for hosting the visit. Your support, hospitality and commitment to building wellbeing, fostering cross-cultural relationships and supporting one another is a credit to the Men's Shed movement across the Northern Territory.

Now, as Tim puts it, it's time to start thinking about the chilly weather back in South Australia! ❄️

Men's Sheds contribute to their local community in a variety of ways. The Community Impact Award, otherwise known as the Shed of the Year award, recognises a shed who has done amazing things in their community.

The Cockburn Community Men's Shed has built an extraordinary network of community partnerships, supporting everything from youth work experience and disability inclusion to court-ordered community work programs. Through thousands of volunteer hours and projects for schools, aged care facilities and community groups, the Shed has become a powerful hub of connection, learning and support in the Cockburn community.

Chairman Mike Murphy said, “There are more than 1,200 sheds across Australia, and to be named National Shed of the Year really reflects the wide range of things we do for our local community – from working with schools and community groups to supporting projects here and even overseas.

There were so many great nominations for the Green Shed Award at the recent Shed Awards, that the judges couldn't decide on one winner - so they announced two!

Nepean Men's Shed in NSW was one of the winners for their simple yet highly effective system for washing paint brushes while safely managing contaminated water. Their cost-effective solution captures sediment and disperses clarified water safely, protecting both the environment and their septic system while meeting workplace safety standards.

John Paul Young had a chat to Alan Reid for this segment of The Shed Wireless Podcast.

Focused Blokes: A Simple Idea Making a Life-Changing Difference

At the recent 11th National Shed Gathering in Brisbane, sheds from across Australia came together to celebrate connection, community, and impact. Among the highlights was the Healthy Shed, Healthy Blokes Award, presented to the Belconnen Community Men’s Shed (ACT) for their initiative, Focused Blokes.

While President Gordon Cooper was quick to credit the entire shed —“it took a whole shed to do it”—the story behind Focused Blokes offers valuable insights for every wellbeing and health officer.
